Cole County Sheriff Greg White said he asked the Missouri Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control to investigate the shooting because a deputy fired the shot.
White said no names were immediately being released while the investigation continued.
He said deputies were sent at 7:05 p.m. Saturday to a domestic disturbance in the 3200 block of Rademan Lane, off Frog Hollow Road southwest of Jefferson City, where a man reportedly was beating and choking another person, and threatening to use a shotgun.
Deputies reached the residence at 7:16 p.m. Sometime after that, a deputy fired a shot and someone was injured.
White said the injured person was not the person who had been making the threats.
He said the suspect in custody was being held on second-degree domestic violence, unlawful use of weapon and armed criminal action charges.
Deputies will continue to handle the domestic violence case while the patrol investigates the shooting, the sheriff said.
White said he was not able to report immediately any other details of the Saturday night incident.
