He had more than 250 Missouri lawyers laughing Friday afternoon as he described his life and the process leading to his appointment last month as the newest judge on the seven-member high court.
Missouri Bar President Thomas Burke told the crowd Fischer's remarks were “the only Supreme Court speech in history that was written entirely in a deer stand.”
Fischer, 45, said he grew up in Watson, Mo., which he called the “farthest-northwest town in the state.”
After graduating from William Jewell College, Liberty, with two degrees (philosophy and political science) that “aren't really great for getting jobs right out of school,” Fischer said, he went to the University of Missouri-Kansas City Law School, and then clerked for then-Supreme Court Judge Andrew J. Higgins.
Fischer practiced law for 17 years before winning Atchison County's associate circuit judge's post in 2006.
