Man charged for molestation

Published: Wednesday, November 19, 2008 8:47 AM CST
A Jefferson City man has been charged with molesting a child by touching her inappropriately after giving her sleeping pills.

According to court documents, Brett Courtney, 38, of 206 Indian Meadow Dr., is charged with first-degree child molestation for putting his hand down the pants of a girl who was under the age of 14.

According to a probable cause statement filed by Jefferson City police, the victim said she was at a sleepover at Courtney's home, and she discovered her pants were down when she woke up at two different times during the night, and that she was awake when he tried to touch her a third time.

The girl also told police Courtney had told her the pills were for the flu. The crime is a Class B felony. If convicted of the charge, Courtney could face a prison sentence ranging from five to 15 years.

" I find it disturbing also. By the way, I just heard on the news that a 10 year old (in Columbia, I believe) falsely accused a teacher and a classmate. I hope this isn't going to be commonplace. "

" I think it is wrong for the media to publish allegations in the first place. There is no moral integrity in it at all. They print what sells regardless of how it affects someone who turns out innocent. I rarely believe what I read about allegations until there is a conviction. Should be illegal to report before a court case. Allegations are just that, not necessarily FACTS. Perhaps someday the media will actually care about people and not just selling stories to make money. "

" Very true. I try to keep an open mind on these things and apologize for stating earlier that it was disgusting before realizing that it may have been reported wrong. People need to do some research on the god awful McMartin case out in California before they pass judgement. Do you ever pray that your families problems never hit the paper for fear they will get a public lynching??? "

" Who would want a retraction on something like this? So more people could see it than did the first time. I would say a lawsuit is more likely. Just a tragedy all the way around. "

" If the drugging isn't true, why doesn't the paper retract the statement??? "

boxergal wrote on Nov 30, 2008 11:06 AM:

" Actually Shiney....you are right about used to do business there. Used to love the place but they no longer (shall we say) take care of what I bought there. Place has gone downhill. I don't know this guy that well to pass judgement, so I most certainly won't. It seems like there is something in the air lately with these cases. "

" My own daughter has stayed at his home several times and I know he is innocent. He is an honest and kind person who is a great father. This false accusation has been very traumatic for his entire family. Hopefully, this girl will see the light and come out with the truth. I am praying for the girl, the accused, and both families. "

jclady wrote on Nov 28, 2008 6:29 PM:

" Ignorance is bliss I suppose. People making a conviction without any facts or knowledge of anything aside from a newspaper article. In fact, a newspaper article that incorrectly reported the FACTS of the allegation. I know for a fact that the girl never accused him of giving him sleeping pills based on the probable cause statement. Many people are exonerated that do time after new evidence is found. Let the justice system do its job before you convict him. Believe it or not, innocent people are accused and convicted. "

" I removed some comments alleging specific information about people because I have no practical way to confirm or deny that type of information; thus, it could lead to an increase in using the forum to post false information for various motives. Also, try to keep punishment discussions focused on the issue of what the legal forms of punishment for this type of charge should be. Comments supporting violence toward defendants (who, of course, are innocent of the state's allegations until proven guilty in court) are outside the intended scope of this forum. " OUTDATED HIPPEE?!?!
That's rich! I'm about the most NON hippee you'll ever meet!
If convicted, the guy needs to take a serious hit. The laws allow for that. I'm just pretty cautious about endorsing capital punishment for a non-capital crime.

Oh, and Boxer, I think you meant to say "I USED to do buisness there". I wouldn't spend a dime with them if the guy is still employed there. "

" Oh shiny you outdated hippies never cease to amaze me. You'll go miles defending someone who molests childeren becuase your not in danger of it. The "As long as it didnt happen to me or mine" additude is greatfully dying out. Soon, we wont have to have these discussions about the convicted child molesters rights. They'll just go to sleep and never hurt little kids again. "

Pace admitted that he contacted a person he believed to be a 13-year-old girl in an Internet chat room in December 2004. In reality, Schlozman said, Pace was communicating with an undercover officer with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department. During these online chats, Pace initiated conversations regarding sexually explicit conduct, including having sexual intercourse with her, and repeatedly tried to make plans to meet in person. He also sent a live video image of himself." " Pace arranged to meet the girl at her house and then go to a motel. He was arrested when he arrived at the residence" "

What other crimes do you see as worthy of execution?
Lock him up! He'll get all the sex he'll want in prison.
Probably not the variety he's accustomed too though.
15 years is a long time to be somebody's prison babe! Probably appropriate too. "

I can share that, right lumps? lol It's no different than posting those case.net files, right? "

" This christian babble makes me sick. W. Scott Pace was a "christian" - volunteered working with the youth - was "called" to be a youth minister. Had two pre-teen/teen daughters. Volunteer fireman.
And none of that stopped him from pulling on his fireman's T-shirt and driving to boone county to meet a thirteen year old girl. Fortunately, he actually meet a undercover cop.
Too many times, the label of "christianity" is camouflage. "

" Children are scared to talk about being molested - fear of not being believed, a fear they are to blame, a fear of being thought of as "dirty". This child has a right to speak out and accuse this man - as much as he has a right to his day in court. I hope this child, and her family, is strong enough, brave enough to come through this experience. My thoughts are with them. "

Doorfry wrote on Nov 19, 2008 3:09 PM:

" Sorry, ran out of room--that he or she was falsely accused doesn't mean that the allegations against them were false. It is easy to say that, but most people who are accused say it is a false accusation. Being a Christian also does not stop you from being a molester because Christians are not immune from doing wrong. I was personally abused by a "Christian family man". I just want to be fair to both the child and the man. I don't think it has been long enough to know enough to accuse either of wrongdoing with any certainty. It is hard to treat the adult and child as both "innocent until proven guilty", but it seems right to me. "

Doorfry wrote on Nov 19, 2008 3:05 PM:

" This is the first time I have posted on here and I have seen that often people are quick to assume the worst and think that an article in the paper makes someone guilty without a trial or even an investigation. It is important to remember that false claims are filed for a variety of reasons. A child may make something up or may truly think the allegation is true, but are confused or have a distorted perception of events because their minds are still forming. I don't want to be too quick to accuse the child of being a liar any more than I want to accuse the man of being a molester without the evidence needed. Also remember that a person saying "

" The "he's a Christian" thing hardly means anything. PRIESTS are Christians, or so they'd say and we know the mess some of them have had. That said, due process needs to occur. I don't take any story at face value. If the guy did it, he needs to be held accountable. If he did not and the girl made it up, what a horrible injustice that his name is ruined.
Regardless, lives are changed by this event. "

jclady wrote on Nov 19, 2008 1:55 PM:

" I must agree with citizen. Children do sometimes make up things. If this person is guilty, by all means, convict him. I was speaking with some of my coworkers about this article and three different people said they had been accused falsely in the past. Kids sometimes don't realize how devastating this can be to the accused. I know this guy and am 100% sure he is innocent. He is very family oriented and a Christian. I am sure the truth will come out. I was also told from someone who knows that the paper has the sleeping pill thing incorrect. I was told the girl never said he gave her anything, only the allegation of the pants. I also know the wife was home.Letsprayforeveryoneinvolvedastheyareallsuffering. "

" What happened to innocent until proven guilty? Perhaps this guy did nothing wrong. Kids accuse people for multiple reasons. I once almost gave myself a black eye and was going to call the police on my dad when I was mad at him. Nothing is known yet. Justice and the truth will come out and then we can judge. "

lumpsinthesandbox wrote on Nov 19, 2008 12:33 PM:

" Boscoe - I was wondering the same thing. Any parent who knows this sick fool is probably freaking out wondering if he molested their child. I also wonder if there was an adult woman in the house (wife / girlfriend)?

Let him wake up in a cold cell block one night, with a big hairy paw reaching under his garments. "
