Civil War shaped by German influence

Immigrants from Germany paid a price by supporting Union cause, but they gained respect and clout

Drawn by Missouri's fertile valleys and rolling wooded hills, German immigrants made significant contributions to the Union Civil War effort, local historian and author Ken Luebbering said Thursday.

But the underlying reasons for the settlers' anti-slavery, pro-Union stances are less clear to historians, he added.

Missouri was settled by a variety of people. But Germans were not welcomed by everyone. Clairborne Fox Jackson - who served as Missouri Governor briefly in 1861 - declared in an earlier speech: “Germans seeking homes in Missouri should be met on the threshold, knocked on the head and driven back.”
