Jefferson City not the first choice to be state's capital

This westward facing artist’s view of the 1840 Capitol shows a previous governor’s residence to the left of the Capitol. It is the building with white collums in the upper left corner of the painting. F. Vogler painted the scene in 1853. The painting is in the Cole County Historical Society. (Jim Dyke/News Tribune)

Although Jefferson City was not the original seat selected for state government after Missouri entered the Union in 1821, it was only five years later that it became the permanent site - the third community to hold the title.

Because Jefferson City was not an established city at the time, if it had not been selected by a commission formed to choose a capital, some local historians believe it is possible it may never have come into existence.

" I don't know if it's available in the on-line version of the California newspaper, but the printed version has a historical section in it ever week...5 years ago, 10 years ago, 25 years ago, 50 years ago, etc. It's interesting reading. California paper is owned by same company as NT and California paper can be picked up at NT office. "

" so Jigger - what's you're point. This was a good article, I wonder of other papers write as interesting articles about the history of thier counties. "

" No one knows the history of that tree and why it grew that way. But being an outdoorsman and hunter I see young trees growing that way all the time in the woods. So what is the history of Moniteau County being in the center of the state? I don't understand the purpose of this article. Every state has a county in the center of it and every county in the state has history. "

" Speaking of the crooked tree. For as long as i can remember our family has taken photos of all the kids, and garndkids at the tree. I myself have my kids photos taken there too. "

" If you ever get to California, stop by the city park, just ask anyone where "the crooked tree" is, and they will tell you how to get there.

Saying goes, that Indians would mark trails by bending trees, and this one survived and still does to this day. Many years ago, there was talk about cutting it down, which caused the whole city to go nuts, so it was spared. Can't tell you how many prom, engagements, wedding photos have been taken near this tree. "

" Darn, I have to start getting the paper on line again. I love these articles. We have ridden up to this church while out on the Katy Trail. I love old churches and history. I also am interested in the historically black church out on Oilwell Road. "

" somewhere I have a picture of my aunt when she was 15 in 1928 sitting on the dock at the shoe factory by the prison complex. She worked there with my grandfather after he quit farming. There is so much history in this area I really have to start looking for these stories. I could tell a few of my own, second-hand of course I'm not THAT old. "

" These articles about the history of Central Missouri are great. JCPatriot, the paper usually runs these articles once a week. You can also check out the Cole County Historical Society Museum, across the stree from the Governor's Mansion. Also, google Historic City of Jefferson and you'll pull up the web site for that organization. Membership is quite affordable, and they have programs throughout the year. The website lists upcoming programs and you can also see a list of last years programs to see the type of thing they do. Also, the Missouri State Archives has programs relating to history throughout the year. You can contact them and request to be added to their mailing list to get their announcements about upcoming programs. "
