“Approximately 5,000 people got real estate tax bills that they shouldn't have (received),” Vincent said. “They can rest assured, if they were paying their (real estate tax) payments in escrow, for the company to pay them, that that company did receive the billing.”
Vincent said his office received several calls Monday from taxpayers concerned about getting a bill that should have gone to the escrow company.
“Several people who have called are very alarmed,” Vincent said. “But they shouldn't be, because we have already verified that that company has received all the tax bills they were supposed to.”
Vincent said the escrow company provided the names of about 6,000 real estate taxpayers using its escrow services - but a computer problem prevented around 5,000 of those names from downloading into the collector's system, leaving the collector's computers thinking they needed separate bills.
Vincent apologized for the inconvenience.
The problem was found soon enough that there's no reason to delay the Dec. 31 deadline for paying property and real estate taxes.
“We have to have them mailed by Dec. 1,” he explained. “We're trying to get them out about two months ahead (of the due date).”
