Stay off street during neo-Nazi march

Published: Thursday, November 6, 2008 3:09 PM CST
When members of the National Socialist Movement conduct their scheduled march Saturday afternoon, authorities will allow only those in the march to be in the street.

For safety reasons, others must stay on the sidewalks.

The group will march past the Governor's Mansion around 1:30 p.m. toward the Capitol, where their rally will start at 2 p.m. on the south side of the building.

The Jefferson City NAACP and various community organizations are planning to host a “Rally for Unity” at 2 p.m. Saturday at McClung Park to counter the NSM rally.

" Boscoe,
When it comes to riots and protestors fighting in the streets. The police & others LE agencies are trained to l sweep & cuff up everyone rioting or protesting in the streets between the barracades. Its proto-call & how LE. Rioting training is conducted.

If you stay on the sidewalks & being quiet behind the barracades, they won't cite you & cuff you for protesting or rioting, both are against the law, when police order you to stop either action...

I'll watch it on local news where its safe...lol "

while. Do you go to funerals to see people you do not know just to see who
shows up at them ? Same thing . you kill me "

" I just say STAY AWAY. The more people that show up, the more they think they are being supported... even if you are against with anti-hate signs. If they march to a ghost town, I can almost guarantee they won't come back. That's what we all want.
There are several events taking place if you must get out. The Boys and Girls Club is hosting a small gathering. As stated in the message, the NAACP is having a gathering at the park. Go shopping across town, stay in for games with the family. Go support MIZZOU LOL, anything but stand around watching these poor excuses march up and down the streets promoting hate.
Just my thoughs :) "

" Putting up barricades along the route to protect the Nazis from the public???

Do they put up barricades for parades?

Why all the protection for the Nazis? Just let 'em march and see what happens.

People who go to watch will be able to protect themselves and/or are responsible for theirselves.

Why does the government have to protect everyone, especially a bunch of ignorant Nazis?

That is the problem with this town. JC government thinks they have to stick their nose into every little event and every little facet of poeple's lives and try to control everything. Have some faith in the citizens. "

" 2 cents - Rick might know more, but my understanding is the streets will reopen following the march, just like they do after the Christmas parade, etc.. I do not believe they will remain closed like over the 4th because there are not additional activities/booths set up downtown. NSM marches down the street, goes to the Capitol for their little whatever and our lives continue as if they were never here. If people avoid downtown or at least ignore the marchers, it will be uneventful. If idiots go downtown to confront the marchers, it'll be just like in Columbia last time...the protesters end up going to jail. "

two_cents_worth wrote on Nov 7, 2008 9:58 AM:

" So the streets will reopen once the march has passed and prior to the end of the rally? Nowhere have I read this. I have assumed it would be more similar to the Fourth of July street closings. "

online_editor wrote on Nov 7, 2008 9:23 AM:

" two cents: That's what a parade permit accomplishes. Allows the permit holders to be in the street, but not the general public. No different legal concept than what's applied to the Christmas parade really. In that case, there's not much danger if the public steps a bit off the curb, yet they're still not permitted to wander out and block the parade. This situation's a little more volatile, so police are being firm on enforcement to try to prevent a conflict. In addition to enforcing a city ordinance requiring pedestrians to stay on the sidewalk, government generally has the legal authority to regulate the "time, place and manner" of public assemblies in order to preserve public safety. "

two_cents_worth wrote on Nov 7, 2008 8:52 AM:

" In addition, while the street IS blocked, the nsm will enjoy special treatment by mulling around in the middle of the street, while us citizens are confined to the sidewalks, effectively removing us from our own streets a second time.

Make that score: nazi's 2, JC government 0! "

two_cents_worth wrote on Nov 7, 2008 8:31 AM:

" wow, please re-read my entire post. Nowhere did I state that 'pedestrians' are being ordered off the streets. The street will be closed and unavailable for traffic during the evil affair effectively removing us from our own streets. So ya might wanna argue a different cause.
Score stands! "

" exactly Wow - true Germans do not foster this ignaorance. The 'supreme' nazi leader was nothing more than an inbred mutt that just happened to have enough charisma to make people believe his lies.
The only way I see to fight it is to prevent it from becoming attractive to the fringe that wants to join anything that will get attention.

You cannot fight ignorance with more ignorance and if you give it credence by arguing with it, observers may find it hard to tell the difference. "

wow wrote on Nov 7, 2008 6:59 AM:

" Castigliano, these NSM members did not come from Germany. Oh I'm sure there are few of them born ouside the US, but the majority of this group was born right here in America. Even worse, their foolish hate rhetoric has been festering all over America for years. It's a good thing that not every American supports the NSM or other hate groups operating in these lands.

So let's join together and simply do our bit to make sure the NSM/Hate Groups aren't given a place to operate unopposed anywhere in the world. Let's all say "No to hate"!!! "

wow wrote on Nov 7, 2008 6:39 AM:

" two_cents_worth please re-read the entire news article. Perhaps the NT staff can post that for the readers. It would certainly clear things up a bit.

The entire article states, current law dictates that as long as there is a side walk, JC pedestrians must use them and not the streets. The NSM are being allowed to walk in the streets in a effort to keep them and the separated from the general public walking/standing on the walkways of the city. Citizens can walk through the city on the sidewalks, they just cannot walk in the middle of the streets. So ya might wanna score that: nazi's 0, JC government 1! Stay safe/have fun. "

two_cents_worth wrote on Nov 7, 2008 6:29 AM:

" Remember this also: they plan a book burning. By this overt act, they will actively and with malice be infringing on your right to free speech. And they're just getting started...

I, for one, feel that is a just cause for opposing this march. How many more rights do you lose before you say enough! "

two_cents_worth wrote on Nov 7, 2008 6:22 AM:

" So now we're being ordered off our own streets so the pukes can march unopposed & victorious? Score that: nazi's 1, JC government 0. I didn't think our city leaders could speak french so fluently. I also didn't think we, as citizens, would let them.

We know the law enforcement folks don't want this trash here any more than we do. An effort must be made to halt this rally with communication and the coordination of law enforcement, and it's obvious that it's up to the citizens to accomplish this. Opposition to the police, obviously will not happen, however, opposition to the nsm must. "

" We had a similar situation when I lived in another state and a lot of the local businesses offered special discounts for the time period of the march. This worked out really well, less than 20 people turned out at the march. Not to mention the extra cash brought in by the businesses! "

castigliano wrote on Nov 7, 2008 4:37 AM:

" If the Nazi's don't like America, they can go back to Germany.

Poor Nazi's have no real home anymore, even the German's don't want them.

Poor Nazi's with no home marching on the streets of Jeff.

Disaffected, can you say, poor disaffected Nazi's with no home marching on the streets of Jeff with a black man for their new president.

Take to the streets to show their dissatisfaction, they have lost everything now.

Left, right, left right, march, march, march! "

" It's a free country. These people have the right to march. We don't have to agree with them (and I don't) but they are doing things w/the proper permits and within in the law. So they get to march.

But I agree that the best way to make a loud and clear statement to and about them, is to stay away in droves!

Empty streets, nobody to make a sales pitch to, nobody to see them. Just let them march down empty, silent streets. "
