Tuesday carries added importance for Democrat Robin Carnahan, because she is seeking re-election to a second term in the statewide office.
Based on her record of service and competence in fulfilling the many duties and responsibilities of the office, she has earned re-election to the post.
In addition to overseeing elections, the secretary of state registers corporations, regulates securities and operates the state Archives and State Library, including the Wolfner Library for the Blind.
Carnahan has been conscientious about ensuring that the election process is fair and accessible, and free of errors and fraud. With an 80 percent turnout expected for Tuesday's general election, Missourians can take a measure of comfort that appropriate preparations have been made. As evidence, a nonpartisan research center at New York University School of Law recently reviewed readiness nationwide and rated Missouri among the six most-prepared states.
She has helped Missouri business by trimming red-tape and improving accessibility to required forms and data. She also has worked diligently to educate Missouri investors and protect them from securities fraud.
In addition, Carnahan has modernized the Archives and library to link Missourians with information and historical records.
From voters to business owners, from investors to genealogists, a wide range of Missourians depend on the efforts of the secretary of state. Carnahan's commendable efforts have yielded positive results.
In the contest for attorney general, Republican Mike Gibbons is committed to amplifying his legislative efforts to protect Missourians.
A former House member who now serves in the Senate as president pro tem, Gibbons has championed a number of public safety initiatives. He worked to safeguard children from sexual predators, to protect the elderly and developmentally disabled from abuse, and to shield all Missourians from identity theft and domestic violence.
Gibbons promises to target crime perpetrated on the Internet and to attack the scourge of illegal drugs including methamphetamines. In addition, he is committed to an office that is open and transparent to the public.
On the basis of his record and his initiatives for the office, Gibbons deserves election on Tuesday.
