The new, four-lane section of U.S. 50 - from St. Martins to Route K east of California that was opened to traffic Friday - is one mile shorter than the old, two-lane section it's replacing. More importantly, it's safer.
Speaking at a ribbon-cutting ceremony near the Cole-Moniteau County line, state Rep. Kenny Jones said he doesn't know anyone in the area who hasn't been affected in some way by an accident on U.S. 50.
“I've been in them,” commuter Suzanne Taggart recalled. “Because traffic's going to be spread out and moving, (the new highway is) bound to prevent the bottlenecks and the stop-and-start stuff.”
Meanwhile, construction recently began on the next new section of Highway 50, which will bypass California.
Fun Facts: U.S. 50 passes through 11 states on its 3,072-mile path across the U.S., from Ocean City, Maryland, to Sacramento, California. Its original western terminus was San Francisco. In addition to Jefferson City and Sacramento, other capital cities it passes through are Annapolis, Md.; Washington, D.C.; and Carson City, Nev.

US 50 has needed 4-lane status for years. Everyone agrees that I-70 is way past due, but no effort to finish 50 from Sedalia to Union to help relieve traffic on I-70. US 63 is a very heavily travled highway of death between Jeff City and Rolla. The Trilevel and 54 "S" curve continue to kill and maim, with no work planned to redo these pieces of work. What-do-we-get-for-our-money?
Meanwhile, the continual carnage and death just keeps on occuring on all these mid-Mo roads, and we more for gasoline than anyone else. "
