Director of House Appropriations staff arrested on drug charges

Published: Wednesday, October 29, 2008 1:53 PM CDT
Jefferson City police reported Wednesday that the director of the Missouri House of Representatives' Appropriations staff was arrested Tuesday night on drug charges.

Joseph Roberts, 46, was taken into custody just after 10 p.m. at his residence in the 1500 block of Timber Trail, according to Police Capt. Doug Shoemaker, the department's spokesman.

Shoemaker said they went to the residence on a “check well being” call.

No formal charges had been filed by late Wednesday morning, but Shoemaker said Roberts was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia.

Shoemaker said Roberts posted bond and was released from custody.

Shoemaker said the investigation was continuing.

" Melissa - I don't know if he was set up on the drug stuff or not, but I'd be willing to bet that he well-being check was a ruse to get the cops to his house. I'm guessing someone knew what he did and made a well-being check call. "

" Boscoe - you hit the nail on the head. They should have skipped the well-being check, if he was passed/strung out, let nature take its course. One less drughead to worry about. People need to stop defending the guilty, that's what lawyers are for. Course, every time their lips move, they're lying.

Extreme? Yeah. Clean up the drugs? Yeah, all for that too. "

" Wait a minute here. Why is everyone trying to make the perp to look like a victim?

He's a DRUGGIE.

Don't do the crime, then you won't do the time.

Dang. No wonder this town has gone to the dogs. Everyone, including the judges all feel sorry for these druggies and instead of punishment, they get glorification. "

" Excuse me, why didn't the person that was so concerned about his welfare go over and check themselves? I know how things run in that place and I have to wonder about this. Jealousy and backbiting are the norm. "

" its hard to pass judgement without more information, not very cut-and-dry. You won't find me in defense if the well-being check was because he was strung-out or passed-out. But if he was going about his busingess as usual and someone calls a well being for no apparant reason I'd have to agree with Melissa, soneone wanted to see the headline. "

" wonder what a "check well being" call is, who made the call and why did it lead to him getting searched for drugs? I agree with the person that said politics. I bet he was set up. "

" JC Patriot,

quite a patriot, you "like" seeing peoples lives ruined by bad decisions. Im sure you're a real stand up guy, no skeletons, no vices. people like you sicken me, you would rather see someone in ruin than pray they get help and become a better person.

get a life loser. "

" Sometimes politics go outside the grounds of a state building, I don't know anything for sure, but there is more than one way to get someone out of a state position when "people" don't want them there. Or else he could really be guilty. Either way it will ruin his newly founded director position I am sure. Just makes you think. "

" I agree JCP, but it would also be nice if NT would actually print an investigative story, instead of a partial one.

What type of paraphernalia? Are we talking rolling papers, a crack pipe, syringes, etc.? "
