In-school suspensions out at JCHS

By Bob Watson bwatson@newstribune.com

After-school program to take its place

Published: Sunday, October 26, 2008 12:43 PM CDT
In-school suspension (ISS) will be a thing of the past when students return to class Monday morning, Principal Myron Graber said Friday.

“Generally, most of our ISS (students) are in there because they failed to show up for a detention or something like that,” Graber explained. “It's really based around tardies and absences - and those students really need to be in class.

“So, we're going to try an after-school program in its place, and see if we can make that work.”

The first-year principal acknowledged the change might be harder on family members than the current system.

“It's going to be a little bit of an inconvenience, maybe, on some parents, because we're going to ask kids to stay after school,” Graber said.

Graber said under the high school's current block scheduling plan, if a student misses one day of class, it's like missing two days of class under a more traditional schedule.

Graber also discounted anyone's fears that keeping in class those students who now are going to ISS could lead to more classroom disruptions.

“There might be one or two kids (doing that),” he said. “But, we looked at our data and over 95 percent of our students are in there for something other than that.

“If we have students who are disruptive, we need to deal with that.”

" FINALLY some comments about the situation, rather than stale political slogans.

The issues:
1. What to do with students in the classroom not interested in learning.
2. Administrators who change the rules and procedures.
3. Did teachers have any input in this change?
4. Did the central office have anything to do with the changes?
5. Can a building administrator change policy on their own, with no input from staff, central office, board approval?
6. Did the administrators seek staff input before this change?
7. Did administrators seek staff approval before this change? "

" If the school system had more support from the parents, we may not have the problems we have in our HS. Parents it's time to step up to the plate and take responsibility for your own kids, how they act, and reasonably support the disaplinary actions of the school system. If they have support instead of critism and threats of lawsuits...they may be able to punish the deserving in a fitting fashion. Sorry for any typos in advance in a hurry. "

I grew up in the hood AND I have 2 kids in JC. Believe me the seriousness is blown way up by over zealous parents that want to baby little Joey all the way through college. Don't get me wrong there are problems in JC but ISS is not going to solve them. "

Boscoe wrote on Oct 30, 2008 10:12 PM:

" Agree with beehumble on one thing: Instead of giving disorderly kids ISS or detention, give them more schoolwork. Make them write a fully-ducumented report on the ill effects of their poor behavior. Make them scrub the bathrooms. Turn the punishment from a little escape from learning into a full-blown highly intense learning activity. Wear their little hands out writing reports about their behavior and why it is not wanted. "

believe what you will. those that are in the know understand the seriousness of the situations at jchs. timeliness is important when you have your own children enrolled there. "

Maybe he knows this from past experience. Quit complaining and give the change some time. If it doesn't work then you can complain. Cry me a river...I have never been in a town that complains so dang much! "

beehumble wrote on Oct 30, 2008 1:06 PM:

" I am glad they did away with ISS. ISS is more of a reward than anything. A free day to goof off. If they aren't working in the classroom, what makes you think they are working in ISS? Staying after school is more of a punishment, takes away their free time. If they are doing the things mentioned in these post (exposure, etc) then they should be kicked out completely. Anyone heard of sexual harrassment? Why would it be any different for teachers and the other student in the class that are exposed. If its hard on a parent to pick up their kid after school, then maybe they should take a look at their parenting skills. "

JC policies are in the handbook that is supplied to each student and on the website. Policies are not being followed with no communication to parents as to changes. Oops, I thot Communication was one of Kimble's 3 C's. We did get communication regarding some new fangled telephone messaging system they've implemented. How much did that cost the district?
Whats the point of talking to the school board. They do what they want. They ignore the facts. District hired a new hs associate principal to a position that wasn't even posted. Where did that money come from? "

" J Biscayne - you are only going to get answers when you make an appointment and go and talk to the staff at the school. Hit their website and get a copy of the policies, newsletters, etc.
The real problem is the parents raising kids with no boundaries - and letting them get by with only school punishment. What happens at school has to be punished at home - losing priviledges. Kids will shape up when they are getting "punished" both places.
There are also a few bad apples in the teachers lounge as well. If you have a problem, call them. Won't resolve it? Here's a good line, "My attorney ....."
Works quite nicely. "

"...Her 6-year old daughter Lucy was part of a field trip to City Hall two weeks ago to see her teacher married to her same sex partner. ..."

Are you freaking kidding me? We can't have a "Halloween" or "Christmas" party, but we can have a field trip to a gay wedding???!!!!! "

I knocked the adminastration, faculty and staff of JCHS for being incompetent. You see why would they change things? The state, federal and local money's rolling in, and the parents dont care as long as the football team wins.

Meanwhile kids are falling through the cracks becuase noone will kick out the thugs and hoodlems who take away from the other students education.

My kids now attend private/independent school so this doesnt hurt me...so I guess your right let it burn! "

Boscoe wrote on Oct 27, 2008 1:50 PM:

As for football, I don't see many other non-required programs that are as heavily staffed and received funding in excess of $5 million this past year and that serve so few students. "

mamamia wrote on Oct 27, 2008 1:07 PM:

" JCHS has a lot more going for it than football. Don't be so insultive to other programs that work hard.

In the JCHS Handbook it describes what kind of conduct will get you what type of punishment. Is this being followed? Has the school district adopted new discipline policies that wasn't made public? The statement from Mr. Graber as to who is actually in ISS is a far stretch from the truth. Why are we punishing the teachers and the kids who want to learn by keeping the disruptives in classroom setting. I'm sick to death hearing we need to keep butts in classrooms just to get federal money! "

ODF wrote on Oct 27, 2008 12:46 PM:

" Sorry countercouple, but a child without an education and AT LEAST high school graduation is not just the parents' problem. It is society's problem...mine and yours...because that will be the same "child" that robs us at gunpoint, holds up the c-store or kills an innocent person in drug-related drive by.

We need to get back to old-time values, old time morals, old time intolerance for stupidity and old time punishment. "

ODF wrote on Oct 27, 2008 12:43 PM:

" Given the zero tolerance of schools and the zero tolerance of the law when it comes to sex-related crimes, I too doubt that students are flashing and the police are not called, a report made and charges filed. C'mon...let's be real. Are we talking a little disruptive, which most students have been accused of by talking to someone else, etc., or are we talking removals from class for more serious issues? I'm not buying the flashing in school story...if the teacher/admin's didn't file a report then the other student and/or parent should have. If nobody did, then don't blame the school...but I highly doubt that actually happened. "

IMO, we should let private buisness run our education system. Then if your sweet little child beats up his or her teacher, exposes themselves or whatever theyre just kicked off the property. At that point the "wonderful child" becomes the problem of the parents not the state.

This program works in Germany, Briton, france, russia and almost every asia country excluding china. I just read a news story of it happening in California as well. "

Teachers aren't selectively removing students, they are removing students who specifically inhibit their ability to teach the class.
Students who curse out teachers or who expose their private parts in class are being sent right back to the same classroom from which they were removed.

They COULD sit in the office, they COULD sit in ISS, instead, they go right back to continue their negative and disruptive behavior, because its important for THEM to be in the classroom. Again, if I were a parent, I'd be outraged that these students were being sent back to class. "

Boscoe wrote on Oct 27, 2008 10:56 AM:

The lack of dicipline for students at school and at home is just a reflection of how our once-great Christian country founded on freedom and personal respojnsibility is nearing its end. Everyone has to rely on an impotent government to solve all their problems, including these students. "

ODF wrote on Oct 27, 2008 10:23 AM:

" But that was also back in the day when getting swats wasn't out of the question.

I agree that persistant disruptions should not be permitted, but teachers should not be routinely allowed to decide who is and is not in their classroom. Persistant offenders should receive increasingly more severe punishment and there does come a point when they might need to be removed from the class. "

Are you saying that the first time a student is removed from class they should be sent to ISS immediately? C'mon...it's been a few years since I was in school, but I remember people being sent to the principal's office and were back in class later that day or the next. "

As a graduate of JCHS I can tell you first hand that this school is a massive failure.
To much attention is given to problem and disruptive students which always takes away from the ones who wanted to be there.

Shouldnt JC do like every other school in america and send these "real winners" to an alternative school/prison so they can get the "special attention" they need?

Of course this would never happen because...yaknow its footbal season.

Plus teachers get in trouble if they give a below average grade even if its warranted by not doing the work or not coming to school. What motivation does my child have to do the work if others don't and aren't held accountable.

What happened to principals comments that no new changes would be made his first year. He said he would stand by that policy. Your nose is growing pinnochio. "

lustywench wrote on Oct 26, 2008 6:36 PM:

Its a slap in the face to our qualified teachers who make a classroom management judgment to remove a student who is preventing other students' learning. If a teacher sends a student out, the administrators should back the teacher's decision and put that student in an alternate environment, like ISS.

Parents should be outraged that disruptive students are being sent back to class, preventing their student's teacher from adequately relaying teaching the class.

The new principals are too interested in making changes just to make waves, not to improve JCHS. School board, take note. "

Don't believe for one second that the majority of these kids are non disruptive. Why else would they get referrals to the office in the first place. Just ask your student, they'll tell you that they are only too happy to have some peace and quiet in the classroom when some of these offenders get removed.

There is way too much tension at the high school right now between teachers and especially new administrators. It shouldn't be ignored by the school board. "

I don't know which one works, but obviously there were some good reasons to go from detention to ISS, and now they are going back? Maybe neither one works, but educators have such narrow experience and tunnel vision that they don't know any other solutions than ISS or detention?

Time to get some better administrators at all levels in education. Higher Ed sure isn't preparing them well. "
