Your Opinion
Obama offers superior health care plan

By Josh McClane, Jefferson City

Dear Editor: While watching the debate Oct. 15, the fundamental differences in each candidate's health care plan became clear to me.

I was listening closely because I believe health care should be one of the most important issues for Missourians right now.

McCain ‘s proposal for helping Missourians includes the further deregulation of insurance companies and something called health tax credits, but what he isn't telling you is that he intends to pay for those credits by taxing the health care benefits of 3.1 million Missourians for the first time ever.

Expert analysis has found his tax would actually undermine the employer-based insurance system and lead 406,000 Missourians to lose their current health care coverage they receive from their employers. This means more than 1.1 million Missourians will be without coverage if McCain's plan is implemented.

McCain also doesn't tell you that his $5,000 tax credit covers less than half the cost of the average health care plan. In 2007 the average health insurance plan in Missouri costs almost $12,000 - more than double the value of McCain's health care tax credit.

Senator Obama's plan for health care (as opposed to McCain's) is very simple and beneficial to all Missourians. He will reduce health costs by standing up to the insurance and drug companies. He will let Medicare negotiate to lower drugs, focus on prevention, and reduce waste and inefficiencies by modernizing the health system and he will reform the private insurance market so that no one will be denied coverage for pre-existing conditions. All of this equates to a savings of as much as $2,500 for the typical Missouri family.

There are many issues on the table right now, but when it comes to health care, there is only one candidate who is looking out for Missourians, and that candidate is Barack Obama.

" Adding governmental oversight and administration is just going to increase costs exponentially. When has the government ever gotten into anything that has resulted in lower costs and higher quality of services? "

" Insurance is just sharing risk. Adding high-risk individuals to the goup just raises the costs for the entire group. People who are employed, not on drugs, etc. are lower risks. Why force them to include and pay for people who do not take care of themselves or live lifestyles more likely to cause illness or injury?

I agree that folks with developmental disabilities or congenital issues need to be helped. But I am very much against forcing me to help pay for increased costs due people who smoke, are obese, skydive, engage in behaviors that put them at risk for AIDS, etc. "

" If Obamas plan goes into effect, I sure hope he at least spends some of the money on undercover investigators to make sure there arent people taking blatant advantage of the system. Yes, children NEED healthcare and so does everyone else, but the cildren may be relying on their deadbeat parents to provide for them.

As far as socialism goes, how is our current tax policy NOT socialist? Where the top 10% of earners pay something like 70% of total taxes while the bottom 10% pay NEGATIVE taxes. Yes, we give them more back than they paid. It looks like weve already been "sharing the wealth". "

" hmarie - I understand that wasn't really as concrete as you need. But by allowing the states to dedicate a program to the people who fall in the GAP like what you have described we can circumvent the free market. What I'd like to see in addition to that tool is to make the state programs accountable for their budgets, to make the results match what the expectations were. Historically that is what you get with Missouri's Rep party.
I don't know anyone who couldn't sympathize with your scenario and most give to charitable organizations with that scenario in mind. "

" OBAMA FICTION
Americans With Pre-Existing Condition Under The McCain Plan Will Not Find Coverage.

THE FACTS
John McCain believes that no American should be denied access to quality and affordable coverage simply because of a pre-existing condition. As President, John McCain will work with governors to develop a best practice model that states can follow – a Guaranteed Access Plan or GAP – that would reflect the best experience of the states to ensure these patients have access to health coverage. There would be reasonable limits on premiums, and assistance would be available for Americans below a certain income level. From the JohnMcCain website;

" If you have a "pre-exisiting" condition, not covered by insurance, most people will put off health care b/c they can't afford it, the way costs are now. So the condition gets worse, they get sicker, it gets more and more expensive to treat, when if it had been treated early on with preventative or maintenence care, then it would keep costs down for everyone in the long run. "

hmarie775 wrote on Oct 31, 2008 8:05 AM:

" Said by someone who probably has never had to deal with a "pre-exisiting" condition issue. Say you have asthma and allergies, you lose your job for whatever reason and can't afford the $400 a month that COBRA is going to charge. You are now uninsured. You For your asmtha you need a daily inhalor and some allergy meds. You can't afford them, so you go without and end up in an ER with a bill you can't pay, that cost is passed along to everyone in higher costs. Then you get a new job but it won't cover your asthma or diabetes or whatever the condition is, what are you supposed to DO? "

naturally wrote on Oct 31, 2008 8:04 AM:

" you are right Boscoe,
I'm afraid if the Dems have their way with healthcare the insurance and/or healthcare will be paid one way or another with tax dollars. The result will be added regulation, more administration, and like most gov programs, will be burdensome. We will see reduced focus on health maintenance and increased deaths from neglect. The cost will still be there and will be paid by those that do not receive the benefit. The only benefactors will be the government in power. "

Boscoe wrote on Oct 30, 2008 9:47 PM:

" Coering pre-existing conditions is going to INCREASE OUR PREMIUMS. This stuff has to be paid for. Where do you think the money is going to come from? It will come from everyone else, whether you have pre-existing conditions or not.

Giving the insurance companies a requirement to issue coverage to high-risk people is not standing up to the insurance companies. It is giving them a license to raise their premiums to cover the added burden of the pre-existing conditions liability and increased administrative costs associated with them.

Wake up, people! Use your heads. "

naturally wrote on Oct 30, 2008 8:59 AM:

" hmarie - I guess you don't understand. We already have coverage the way you understand the obama plan. That is not what he is proposing.
People keep saying they can't buy coverage for $5,000 a year, what is it costing you now? McCain is trying to level the playing field so you don't have to rely on employer coverage for affordable insurance. If the insurance companies were playing on a level field your insurance would cost the same if it was you buying it or your employer.
The only responsibility of the government is to give you an opportunity of affordable healthcare not to pay for it for you. "

hmarie775 wrote on Oct 30, 2008 8:52 AM:

" Why should the government provide ACCESS to health care? Because the uninsured are what keep everyone's health care costs high. Plus sick people can't work and pay taxes...its' in our own best interest to ensure (Insure) the health of our citizens. "

hmarie775 wrote on Oct 30, 2008 8:50 AM:

" One thing I don't understand about McCains's $5 k tax credit for insurance, will this be at the END of the year, meaning I will have to come up with the money to buy my own insurance and then wait for a partial "refund" at the end of the year? If people had the money to purchase insurance, don't you think they would, regardless of a potential refund later, where does the upfront money come from? Maybe I am not understanding correctly how his 5k tax credit works..if so please enlighten me. "

hmarie775 wrote on Oct 30, 2008 8:47 AM:

" Stand up to insurance and drug companies:

Obama's plan:
Require insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions so all Americans regardless of their health status or history can get comprehensive benefits at fair and stable premiums.

I call that standing up.
And where did you see anything about "free" health care? On his website he specifically mentions:Establish a National Health Insurance Exchange with a range of private insurance options as well as a new public plan based on benefits available to members of Congress that will allow individuals and small businesses to BUY affordable health coverage. "

" I have it in my mind because of 2 reasons:

1. Everytime in my life a politician has said that they are only going to raise taxes on the "rich" everyone who pays taxes pays more.

2. Everytime in my life a politician has said that these tax cuts are only helping the "rich" everyones taxes pays less.

So it seems that to a politician you are "rich" if you make enough money to pay taxes in the first place.

On a side note: A "rich" person who is not working a job has no income to pay taxes on. "

" You want better health care coverage? Go back to school, learn some skills, get a degree. Then get a better-paying job with better benefits.

Why does the government (taxpayers like me) have to pay for your health care costs?

Government is not the solution. Government is the problem. "

" Of course, we either have to discredit sources that differ from our opinions or we have to call them down right lies.

Dinger, Guess why should the Gov. provide you with education, why should the Gov. provide you protection from criminals and the like? And taking away tax breaks from the rich is giving more to people whom don't work? When they talk about the rich, they are not talking about us. when did some of you get it in your minds that rich means working a job? "

OldGenX wrote on Oct 24, 2008 9:18 AM:

" What expert did Obama use to come up with the problems in McCain's plan. Was it the same one who walked away from Freddie/Fannie with a 90 million dollar bonus? At least McCain's plan has a concrete $5,000 tax credit. Obama's plan is relying on platitudes and class envy to fuzzy math its way to only half that amount of savings "

OldGenX wrote on Oct 24, 2008 9:12 AM:

" I havn't laughed this hard at an opinion piece in a long time. Were these "facts" pulled straight from the Obama web site or were they just made up. Someone please explain what "Standing up" to the drug and insurance companies means? How are waste and inefficencies going to be cut? How is forcing insurance companies to cover previous conditions going to reduce their cost of doing business? And how did anyone come up with this $2,500 savings. "

dinger wrote on Oct 22, 2008 7:40 PM:

" Yes free health care sounds good but Obama's plan is pure Socialism and nanny state dole to buy an office that he doesn’t deserve or even have an idea how to do. There is no doubt that both candidates are Socialist but there is also no doubt that Obama is the worst of the two as he wants to redistribute the wealth from those that work to those that won't and I don’t feel that they deserve it. Why should the government provide you health care among other things? One of the reasons that people work is to provide for themselves and family but if the government gives you your benefits then will they provide next and then why should you contribute "
