Joplin school board discusses tattoos on teachers

Published: Tuesday, October 14, 2008 7:47 AM CDT
JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) - The upcoming Joplin School Board meeting is expected to include a discussion of tattoos on teachers.

Board members plan to discuss school dress codes at their meeting Tuesday, and the matter of visible tattoos on teachers is likely to come up.

Superintendent C.J. Huff said tattoos could become more of an issue as the district hires young teachers from an age group that's more comfortable with tattoos.

Huff said Friday that more than one person has raised the tattoo question with school administrators.

" Its simple, keep[ the tattoos hidden "out of sight out of mind" The military allows them as long as there hiden to allow person privacysomewhat, and to look professional at the same time. In uniform there was no problems if not showing... "

" Tattoos are a pretty good indication of poor judgement or serious identity crisis at some point in their young life, def not a good selling point at a job interview. At a minimumi If they can't be covered (should be requiredand discussed at interview), thanks for coming in an interviewing, buh-bye.

Piercings, or as I like to call it self-mutilation, and mark of a true mo-ron. "

" Tattoos - one more thing to make you unemployable.

Personally, I don't care if a teacher has a three-masted schooner tatted on their forehead if they can teach. Good teachers are too valuable to our future to worry over something like this.

Piercings are open, weeping sores. I won't eat at a restaurant where the cooks look like they've been in a fight with a staple gun. "

" While some things a teacher does can effect their ability to teach tatoos is not one of them. Being gay or straight is not one of them. I'm as conservative as most. My children were taught great science by an excellent teacher who just happened to be gay. No one made an issue of it because she was an amazing science teacher keeping the subject interesting and making the kids want to learn.
The best special education teacher I know happens to have a tribal on her lower back, she also does not show skin reagardless of whether there was a tatoo or not; or let it interfere with teaching.
Lets get back to teaching! "

How rude, thats all i can say. And take a look, most of your music teachers are gay, that doesnt make them a bad person. My God people, try to get to know someone before you judge them and call them "freaks of society" It just makes me sick how people treat other people just based on looks. Its no wonder we have so many bullies in our schools, look how the parents act, judging someone based on their looks is the wrong thing to teach a child!!!!! "

mommyinmidmo wrote on Oct 20, 2008 8:01 AM:

" This is just crazy. Come on people, really. I myself have 2 tattoos, they are both of my childrens name, does that make me a freak or a bad person, NOPE sure doesnt. Just because a teacher has a tattoo doesnt make them a bad person or a bad teacher, THEY ARE HUMAN just like the rest of us. Their tattoo could be in honor of a loved one who has passed, or their childes name, or a flower. Have you ever heard the saying "dont judge a book by its cover"? That one teacher with a tattoo or the different colored hair, just may be the best teacher your child may ever have. Im so tired of how judgmental this world is. "

Yes, the ones who put their tramp stamps in places that cannot be seen at least have some sense of discretion.

Like it or not, teachers are role models for students. I don't want my kids taught by tatoo'd, pierced, openly gay, colored hair, or otherwise freaks of society. "

" Our art teacher when I was started high school was the quintessential California hippy, long hair and I suspect pot smoker....but one of the best teachers and great artist. "

" Wow...touchy subject. Your job should not dictate every aspect of your life outside of your job. Everyone is crying that teachers are underpaid, can't find quality teachers, etc. and now you want to start excluding potential candidates because of a tat?
On the other hand, do I want some tattooed/pierced pin cushion with tats on their neck, face, arms, etc. teaching my son? On appearance alone, that may not be my first choice, but I'll certainly give them the benefit of the doubt to prove themselves as a teacher. "

CLEAN OUT THE RIFF-RAFF from our teachers! "

Renaldo wrote on Oct 14, 2008 1:36 PM:

" Stupid teachers. These school administrators need to get the teachers in line. Don't worry about what the students are doing (or not doing) but make sure policies regarding the teachers are strict. Maybe the teachers' parents will come in and start complaining and the administration can back down let they do to students' parents. "
