Flocking to see our fine, feathered friends

Without even seeing a bird, Jim Rathert pauses outside of this centrally located Jefferson City home and said: “Did you just hear that? That was a Eurasian Collared Dove.”

Rathert said he enjoyed birding even in the 1970s, before his famed career with the Missouri Conservation Department took off.

To help spread the love of birding, Rathert is teaming up with the Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Department, Birds-I-View and the River Bluffs Audubon Society to create the Memorial Park Bird Garden.

“It is going to be a great place for the bird watchers to come and sit. It will also serve as the place where, hopefully, many people will come and learn to appreciate birds also.”

To help spread the word about the bird garden, Birds-IView is hosting a Big Sit from dusk to dawn on Oct. 12 at the garden.
