Vanishing art

Photo: Houston Davis, right, of ServiceMaster Professional Cleaning and Disaster Restoration in Jefferson City, uses a pressurized baking soda spray Wednesday to remove the Luche Libre painting on the interior wall of the historic former Missouri State Penitentiary.

The painting was the first of several to be removed. The large paintings, some shown above, were done for the annual Art Inside the Park event.

They are being removed after a controversy arose over the use of paint on the walls. A company spokesman estimated removal would take three days.

Is the place really worth saving? IMO, no, it isn't. However, I'm not in the position to make that decision. "

cinnamon wrote on Oct 7, 2008 3:13 PM:

" I have a better historical comparison for you: if they can tear down Yankee Stadium, why can't we tear down the old MSP?

Is this thing really worth saving? I mean really, the whole place, walls and all??? "

cinnamon wrote on Oct 7, 2008 3:08 PM:

" I am simply entertained when something is completely blown out of proportion like this.

You're also putting words in my mouth - I didn't call the fine folks at DNR "nobodies". But do you really think they enjoy parking in a former penitentiary to begin with? I thought maybe the paintings would brighten their days a little. Kind of distracts from all the barbed wire, no? "

naturally wrote on Oct 7, 2008 2:55 PM:

" cinnamon - does that mean you love to bother people or just to see that they are bothered?
"when the Office of Governor changes parties, and they pick new department heads."
and does this mean that when Jay gets the gov seat we'll finally get a DNR Dir. that cares about Historic Preservation? And as far as "paintings that no one can see anyway" I wouldn't consider the 300 DNR staff that park there nobodies. They may take issue with that. "

cinnamon wrote on Oct 7, 2008 2:40 PM:

" Elected officials did not make the decision to hold Art in the Park at the MSP; rather, it was the Office of Administration. Those in charge there will be gone soon anyway, when the Office of Governor changes parties, and they pick new department heads.

But really, all I was saying the other day is that there is a whole mess of problems in our world, and that I don't think we should go haywire over some harmless paintings that no one can see anyway.

I love that this bothers people so much! "

ODF wrote on Oct 7, 2008 2:18 PM:

" That's okay, because you don't think we should be informed about candidates for local offices and know who makes decisions that we disagree with when it comes time to vote. LOL!!

Historical sites and items are just that, regardless of their original purpose. If the state/city hadn't deemed the walls historical, then I could not care less what was painted on there. "

cinnamon wrote on Oct 7, 2008 1:19 PM:

" The last time I checked, the Liberty Bell, the Statue of Liberty, and Mount Rushmore have never housed convicted killers. I can't decide if the comparison of these places to the MSP is hysterical or farcical. "

ODF wrote on Oct 6, 2008 3:46 PM:

" tjg - If you search the NT site for stories and go back to whenever this event took place, I believe the first article after Art in the "Park" listed names...at least of the agency that approved it and maybe the actual person/people. "

tjg wrote on Oct 6, 2008 3:05 PM:

" Back to my question: WHO APPROVED THIS????? A NAME! I'm serious when I say elections are coming up. If noone knows, who do I call to find out? "

lovemyboys wrote on Oct 6, 2008 11:30 AM:

" I still don't get what the big deal is...I haven't seen the paintings, but what are they? Nudity, profanity, or something? I read a post about a whale in an ocean...again, sooooo?

The State owns this property so I'm assuming they're paying for all this...(or the taxpayers are paying for it)....

Personally, as long as it's not paintings that are "offensive to the general public", leave them...I think once the Federal courthouse is built, it will start improving.

It's going to take time...remember, money's not exactly flowing like the MO River! Some projects might be put "on hold" until the economy starts coming around. "

ODF wrote on Oct 6, 2008 11:21 AM:

" Graffiti is the "way forward"? By all means then, let's go "decorate" the Liberty Bell, The Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, etc......shakin' my head.... "

boscoe wrote on Oct 5, 2008 2:39 PM:

" It is clear that most of the old MSP site will just continue to be a dumping ground for state government, and a place to park state cars and dump off surplus property.

Watch how Surplus Property continues to expand and keep dumping its junk over at the MSP site.

If some amateur artists want to practice on the walls, I have no problem with it. The walls need to come down soon anyway. "

boscoe wrote on Oct 5, 2008 2:36 PM:

" The REAL VANDALISM started when the state vacated the complex and left all those ugly buildings and walls up, and the state doesn't mow the weeds, paint, clean up the trash, etc.

I am embarrassed for our city everytime I go by that huge blight.

What amazes me is that some nuts who live here want to PRESERVE that whole dump site. I say tear it all down, level the terrain, and offer the land for sale to any developer who might want it.

We already have so many vacant sites and empty buildings and empty motel rooms in this town. It isn't like anyone is going to be chomping at the bit to build more buildings. "

freedom wrote on Oct 4, 2008 9:03 PM:

" This is a painfully sad event for Jefferson city to spend money on censorship. I feel for all of you. Thank you to those that are open minded enough and progressive enough to see this as a way forward for those walls instead of returning to the past. I feel sad for those that think this was some kind of vandalism. Very very sad, go stick yer heads back in the sand. "

Boscoe wrote on Oct 4, 2008 2:08 PM:

" Who cares about lead paint dust and poisoning?

Its not like any important people live in the neighborhood.

The lead dust runoff is all downhill to the river. Let St. Louis people drink it next week.

WHAT A HUGE WASTE OF TAX DOLLARS!

WHAT A HUGE EMBARASSMENT FOR OUR POOR GOVERNMENT AND CLOWNS WHO WORK IN IT! "

Boscoe wrote on Oct 4, 2008 9:48 AM:

" The fact of the matter is that the old prison has been empty for several years and the city seems to be happy to let the state ignore the old prison site and not take care of it. The old prison is a hugh ugly blight on Jefferson City, and the state just uses it as a "temporary" parking lot / junkyard / dumping ground, and it gets uglier and more blighted every day.

Why doesn't the city apply pressure to the state to get that property cleaned up and maintained? Stabilize the walls? Clean up the junk?

Oh, I forgot: The city doesn't take care of its property either. Government is our worst enemy. "

Boscoe wrote on Oct 4, 2008 9:44 AM:

" CityGuy, you might want to go look at the holes in the wall. The street construction they are doing now is resulting in a very permanent-looking entrance with curbing, driveways, lighting, etc. for keeping the holes in the walls permanant entrances.
I couldn't care less about the holes or driveways, but they need to clean up the mess and pick up all the debris and junk they have piled around inside and outside the walls, and they need to mow the weeds. If the state needs a parking lot or garage, why don't they get off their duff and build one? What are they waiting for- flying cars to be invented? "

CityGuy wrote on Oct 3, 2008 11:22 PM:

" The reason why most of us that have been paying attention didn't make a big deal about the hole in the wall and the parking lot, is that it is supposed to be temporary. The plan is to repair the wall and build a multi level parking garage. If what is there was permanent, then you bet you would have heard from many, many people about it. "

Boscoe wrote on Oct 3, 2008 10:44 PM:

" Why doesn't the state use the money to clean the walls of the Truman Building that is covered with black mold and really looking dingy?

Instead they are cleaning the old prison walls to make them look nice when they are either torn down next year or fall down on their own.

State employees must have rocks in their heads... "

THE-SKY-IS-FALLING THE SKY IS FALLING cluck cluck!

I agree this is not an important issue Cinnamon, however most people are capable of commnenting, following, or being concerned about many issue, big and small at the same time.

oh and if the lazy debrie that tap the food banks would get out and work, they wouldn't be desperate. A bunch of Lazy shiftless professional poor, they can rot, the kids should be taken, anything would be better than the life their "parents" are providing. "

I would also like to know who thought it was a good idea to cover up history with "art". There is a lot of history in Jeff City, much that could be learned and pitfalls that could be avoided. "

" I have to say we went down to see the art with a group. I don't care that it was painted on the old prision walls I loved it. I think it was great and sad to see it being taken away. If it ment all that much to the people of JC why has the area been destroyed and made in to a big hole that is now call a parking lot. "

ODF wrote on Oct 3, 2008 2:23 PM:

" cinnamon - You may not be aware of this, but we vote for local as well as state and federal officials. Local officials cannot do anything about the things you mentioned. So are you advocating that voters should only vote for federal officials or that ALL votes should be cast for a party based on which federal candidate is supported. I'm confused as to why you're railing on someone for wanting to be informed about which local officials made the decisions on this. Sheesh, is definitely right....but should be directed at folks like you that don't seem to think you should be knowledgeable about ALL candidates at all levels that you will be voting for. Sheesh.... "

Sheesh, get a life and get over it already! "

ODF wrote on Oct 3, 2008 10:30 AM:

" cic - I disagree...the stupid idiots that APPROVED the painting of the walls should pay for it out of their own pocket. Granted the "artists" should have used a little common sense and used maybe something washable or used large canvases over the walls, but it is the fault of those that approved the project and allowed it to happen. "

" Stupid idiots that painted the walls in the first place should pay for this. They have no respect for the "history" that occured in those walls. They don't even begin to fathom what went on in there. And to disrespect the staff and offenders that all served time there makes me angry. There was a reason that there was only one painting on that wall. That is because it was a part of MSP history put there by the convicts. A whale swimming in the ocean is not. I know the Redevelopment commision would have never give permission to paint the wall! "
