Crouched over a blank space of sidewalk at 10 a.m., Nisan and Anja Harlow shared mother-daughter time together after a hectic week. But they also shared their love of art.
“We do a lot of projects separately,” Nisan said. “But we don't usually do art together.”
With a knack for animal faces, Anja set to work on a lion's face while Nisan created flowing ribbons in all directions. Later a blackened backdrop offset the brilliant colors the ladies filled in before their chalk creation was complete by 2 p.m.
“This was a lot of color for us,” Anja said. “It helped. I'm in a good mood now.”
Finished with their entry in the Capital Street Art, the Harlows headed across town to take-in the dachsund races at Old Munichburg's Oktoberfest.
Like the Harlows, the MIchael and Kalo Hoyle also split a perfectweather day between Oktoberfest, where Kalo performed with the Home School Orchestra, and the street art contest.
And participants in other activities around town, including the Memory Walk, carried their message via T-shirt to the other events of the day.
The street art was held on the sidewalks around the Memorial Park paviliion where the sounds of Capitol Jazzfest spilled into the open air. The Harlows and Hoyles brought their subject ideas with music in mind. But it was hearing the music that kept them inspired.
The bright colors and tuxedo in the Harlows' drawing represents the passion and color of the jazz music, Nisan said.
Hoyle noted jazz and their street art had one thing in common - improvisation. The Hoyles' portrait of bass player and composer Charles Mingus didn't come out exactly as they had talked about, nor do the musicians play the same licks the same way every time in a performance.
“It's inspirational to listen to the music and draw your favorite jazz musician at the same time,” Hoyle said.

Now it is a tiny little "jam session" of amateurs at a park with no lighted parking lots and insuficient facilites for even the small croud that attends now. "
