A group arrives back at the Easter Seals Gibbs Center for Independence from bowling and others wait to hear tales of their adventure.
These services and friendship-driven atmosphere are combined into one at the Easter Seals Adult Day Services Gibbs Center for Independence at a low cost. That's because the center receives funds from events like Walk with Me, which will be held at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday at Monroe and East High streets in downtown Jefferson City.
Funds raised at the 5k walk/run/wheel and 1-mile family fun walk go to supplement the budget at the center.
“The money raised stays locally,” said Lois Thayer, walk committee member and Easter Seals Board member. “Walk with Me helps keep the costs as low as we can for the participants and their families.”
Participants include a wide variety of people. Helen Fender is almost 101 years old and spends her time at Easter Seals encouraging others and tells tales of days past. While Easter Seals Ambassador Jeremiah Rosenberg lights up a room with his infectious smile and greetings “Hi Guys! What is going on? What are you doing?”
“The participants have so much fun - the staff does so many different things with him and do wonders with what they are given by Easter Seals and through donations,” Thayer said.
This year Walk With Me has a few new twists.
Longtime honorary chair, Hallie Gibbs Sr., is passing the torch onto Rep. Bill Deeken, R-Jefferson City.
“I do not know that there will ever be anyone to replace what Hallie Gibbs Sr. did for Easter Seals - he put them where they are at,” Deeken said. “But I could not say no to this opportunity.”
“I have been on the Easter Seals state board for the last two years and once you have gone into the Gibbs Center you cannot help but be touched and want to help,” he commented.
Deeken said that a visit to the center and visiting with participants is something that reaffirms how lucky we all are.
“I learn so much from them -each time I go I make a new friend,” he said. “God put people with intellectual disabilities here for a reason and that reason is to help us all realize just how lucky we are. Lucky to have them and lucky to be able to help them.”
The walk begins with check-in at 7:30 a.m. and the walk at 8:30 a.m. at the corner of Monroe and East High streets.
The 5k will begin at that location and finish at McCarty and Monroe streets. The 1-mile family fun walk will begin and finish at East High Street.
Top overall male and female runner walker and wheelchair athlete will be given awards based on age.
For more information, call Betsy Schneider at 1-800-664-5025 ext. 127.
Deeken said, “You will see me out there doing at least the 1-mile family fun walk.”
