A groundbreaking ceremony was held recently in Moniteau County to launch the next 8.3 miles of new highway construction, which will extend the four-lane highway from the end of the first phase near Route K to just west of its intersection with Highway 87 south of California.
The second phase of the U.S. 50 project will continue from Highway 87 via a Super Two (enhanced two-lane roadway) to a point near the intersection of present U.S. 50 and Route H just south of Clarksburg. The Missouri Department of Transportation estimates the second phase to open for traffic during the summer of 2010.
MoDOT District Engineer Robert Schwartze claims the 19 miles of improvement for Highway 50 were made possible by the voter-approval of Amendment 2, providing an additional $1.6 billion. All of that money will have been committed to projects by 2010.
According to Schwartze, the 11 miles of the first phase of the project is due to be opened for traffic about the end of October of this year. When open, the first phase will extend the four-lane highway from St. Martins to Route K just east of California.
