Falcons hope to put last week's loss behind them

Update: Blair Oaks 37, Owensville 13 (final)

Mistakes are correctable. That's pretty much what Blair Oaks has to learn as they prepare to take on the Owensville Dutchmen on Friday night.

Last week, the Falcons turned the ball over three straight times in the second quarter that led to 21 unanswered points, helping Moberly secure a 27-21 win.

“It's just correcting those mental errors,” Blair Oaks coach Brad Drehle said. “We hope it's just a one-time deal. It's one thing, as a coach, that if you harp on it too much, you keep thinking about it and then you tend to do it.

“So we'll work on what we have to do to get better and go through ball security.”

But even turnovers won't change the game plan.

“We're going to go out there with guns blazing,” Drehle added. “We're going to go out at full speed, run the option and spread the field when we have to throw.”

Owensville, which lost to Potosi 27-14 last week, isn't the same team that went to the Class 3 championship game in 2006 or just missed out on the playoffs in 2007.

They're young.

The Dutchmen graduated 13 starters from last year's team that went 8-2. But they have a lot of talent to make up for the lack of experience.

Junior quarterback Ryan Cooper is one of those players that can change the game in a blink of an eye.

“His best plays last week were broken plays,” Drehle said. “He would take a broken play and make it a big play. That's a pretty special kid that has the ability to stay focused and calm to do that.

“He's obviously a concern.”

The Falcons will have to keep a close eye on Cooper, who leads Owensville's double-wing set offense. That gives the Dutchmen plenty of opportunities to keep the ball moving.

“Our defensive tackles are going to have to do a great job of getting penetration but not getting deep,” Drehle said. “If we get up field, that allows their tackles to get up on our linebackers.”
