Jefferson City posts 9-0 tennis dual victory



The Jefferson City Lady Jays tennis team blanked the Helias Lady Crusaders 9-0 on Tuesday at Washington Park.

In singles, Eli Hubbs defeated Paige Kolb 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 10-7 (tiebreaker); Kelly Higgins topped Courtney Rauch 6-3, 7-5; Shannon Gilmore dropped Maggie Crider 6-2, 6-2; Kassandra Price handled Sophie Snedden 6-0, 6-2; Brooke Smith bounced Merritt Gibbs 6-2, 6-0; and Molly Higgins dropped Ashley Roling 6-4, 7-5.

In doubles action, Hubbs and Gilmore stopped Kolb and Rauch 10-7; Kelly Higgins and Smith downed Crider and Snedden 10-7; and Price and Rhiannon Woodruff toppled Gibbs and Roling 10-6.

The Lady Jays (2-0) will host Waynesville on Thursday.


Boys Soccer: Helias 6, Kirksville 1

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Forrest McCurren scored two goals and had an assist as the Helias Crusaders opened their season with a 6-1 thrashing of Kirksville on Tuesday. Michael Schulte, Grant Sherwood, Blake Wenzel and Conor Dermody each added a goal for Helias, which led 3-0 at the half. Kevin Miller chipped in two assists and Dermody had one assist. Jorden Bax worked in goal for the Crusaders, who play Thursday at Camdenton. In the JV game, Cody Fisher had two goals, while Tyler Luebbert and Skyler Stambaugh also scored, as Helias beat Kirksville 4-0.

Softball: Lady Jays 5, Lebanon 1

The Jefferson City Lady Jays coasted past Lebanon 5-1 on Tuesday at the American Legion Sports Complex. Erin Romph went five innings, allowing one run on two hits, to get the win. MacKenzie Bowden finished up to earn the save. Callie Spurgeon knocked out two hits and had two RBI for the Lady Jays (7-0), Whitni Howell had a pair of hits and Romph drove home two runs. The Lady Jays play Thursday at Rock Bridge.

Softball: Helias 10, Fulton 2

FULTON, Mo. - Jill Rackers had a home run, a double and two RBI as the Helias Lady Crusaders rolled over the Fulton Lady Hornets 10-2 on Tuesday. Also for Helias (2-1), Lindsey LeCuru collected a single, double, triple and two RBI; Kayli Heimericks had two hits, including a solo home run; Darah Matheis totaled two hits and two RBI; and Liz Brondel drove home two runs.

McKenzie Hamacher tossed a fourhitter, striking out five and walking two, to get the win.

The Lady Crusaders host Marshall on Thursday at Duensing Field.

Helias won the JV game 15-0 in three innings.

Nicole Buschjost didn't allow a hit and struck out eight to get the win. Shelby LeCuru had a pair of doubles, while Carleigh Cavender had a double and a triple.

Softball: Russellville 6, St. Elizabeth 3

ST. ELIZABETH, Mo. - The Russellville Indians doubled-up the St. Elizabeth Lady Hornets 6-3 on Tuesday. Sarah Koestner picked up the win for Russellville (4-3, 1-0 Show-Me) by giving up six hits while striking out five. Taylor Haslag had two hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs for the winners. Kaitlyn Siebert had three hits, including a triple, and one RBI, while Becca Raithel had two hits. Renee Struemph pitched an eight-hitter, striking out five and walking one, in the losing cause for the Lady Hornets (1-3, 1-1). Marcia Clayton had two hits, including a double for St. Elizabeth, while Callan Luetkemeyer had two RBI. Russellville, which won the JV game 6-2, will play Thursday at New Bloomfield. The Lady Hornets will host Eugene on Thursday.

Softball: Vienna 13, Bourbon 0

VIENNA, Mo. - The Vienna Lady Eagles blasted Bourbon 13-0 in five innings Tuesday. Kayla Miller didn't allow a hit, striking out 11 and walking two, to notch the victory. Katlyn Miller, Kaylynn Kleffner and Shelby Combs had two hits apiece for Vienna (3-0, 2-0 Gasconade Valley), which hosts Salem on Thursday. Vienna won the JV game, 7-3.

Softball: South Callaway 8, Fatima 3



WESTPHALIA, Mo. - The Fatima Lady Comets dropped an 8-3 decision to South Callaway on Tuesday. Angie Hagenhoff took the loss for the Lady Comets. She gave up eight runs off 11 hits while striking out six and walking three. Caitlin Schwartze drove in one run off one hit for Fatima, while Rachel Kleffner had one hit. Fatima (1-3), which lost the JV game 5-1, will host Southern Boone on Thursday.

Girls Golf: Lady Jays win triangular



SEDALIA, Mo. - The Jefferson City Lady Jays won a triangular meet with Helias and Sedalia Smith-Cotton on Tuesday. The Lady Jays shot a 192, Sedalia was second at 194 and Helias third at 215. For the Lady Jays, Brittany Smith led the way with a 44 and Lauren McHenry chipped in a 48. Amanda Houts and Kylie Turner both shot 50. For Helias, Morgan Branch turned in a 50, Courtni Taggart had a 53, Ali Boemhoer shot 54 and Liz Grothoff had a 57. Medalist for the meet was Sedalia's Amanda Azar, who fired a 39.

Volleyball: Fatima wins opener



WESTPHALIA, Mo. - The Fatima Lady Comets opened up their season with a 25-18, 25-19 win over School of the Osage on Tuesday. Alyssa Thoenen had six aces and five assists for the Lady Comets, while Tabi Williams had six kills. Calli Haslag chipped in with six digs. In JV action, Megan Pope led the Fatima A team to a 25-13, 24-26, 25-12 win with seven kills. Fatima's B team lost 22-25, 19-25. The Lady Comets will play Thursday at Chamois.

Volleyball: Lady Jays frosh sweep



COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Jefferson City Lady Jays opened their freshman season by sweeping Oakland Junior High on Tuesday. In the A match, Danielle Moore totaled 17 service points, five aces and two kills as the Lady Jays cruised to a 25-8, 25-6 win. Leah Washburn had 14 points and five aces for the winners. In the B match, the Lady Jays rumbled to a 25-7, 25-5 win. Michelle Jaegers had 14 points, six aces and two kills, while Jennifer O'Dell added two kills.

Baseball: Eugene 2, New Bloomfield 1



EUGENE, Mo. - The Eugene Eagles scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to edge New Bloomfield 2-1 on Tuesday. Daniel Berry took the loss for the Wildcats. He gave up two runs on seven hits, striking out six and walking one.

New Bloomfield (0-2) took a 1-0 lead in the second when John Filkins had an RBI single. Filkins went 2-for-3.

Eugene tied the game in the fifth inning before scoring the winning-run in the seventh to end the game.

The Wildcats, who lost the JV game 4-3, will open up the Eugene-Russellville Tournament at 5 p.m. Friday against St. Elizabeth in Eugene.

Baseball: St. Elizabeth 5, Crocker 1



ST. ELIZABETH - Will Reeves and Caleb Kemna combined to strike out 15 Crocker batters in St. Elizabeth's 5-1 win Tuesday.

Reeves worked 3 1 /3 innings, allowing one hit and three walks while striking out eight. Kemna pitched the final 3 2 /3 innings, giving up a hit and walking three. He struck out seven.

Chris Wilde and Tyler Holtmeyer had two hits each in the win. Holtmeyer also scored two runs. Wilde, Holtmeyer, Ethan Wieberg and Austin Rehagen all had an RBI each.

Brad Uherka took the loss for Crocker. He gave up three earned runs on eight hits while striking out 14 St. Elizabeth batters in six innings.

St. Elizabeth (3-1) will play in this weekend's Eugene-Russellville Tournament. The Wildcats will open against New Bloomfield at 5 p.m. Friday in Eugene.

St. Elizabeth won the JV game 10-0.

Football: Helias JV wins



MARSHALL, Mo. - The Helias JV jumped out to a 20-6 halftime lead and went on to thump Marshall 41-6 on Tuesday.

The Crusaders opened the scoring with a 20-yard run by Connor Porter in the first quarter. Zachary Rockers kicked the first of his five PATs to make it 7-0.

In the second quarter, Jacob Seidel scored on a 1-yard run and the PAT was blocked. Porter then had a 7-yard scoring run to help the Crusaders take their halftime advantage. Helias had two scores in the third quarter, a 9-yard run by Porter and a 22-yard pass from Rockers to Brett Gerstner. In the fourth quarter, Rockers hit Jeremy Braun with a 7-yard scoring pass. Helias (1-0) will host Hickman on Tuesday.

Football: Jays frosh win



FLORRISANT, Mo. - The Jefferson City Jays freshman football team opened up the season Monday with an 18-14 win over McCluer North. The Jays trailed 14-2 at the half, before Jarred Johnson scored on a 1-yard run. Johnson ran in the first of his two-point conversions to cut McCluer North's lead to 14-10. In the fourth quarter, Carter Stephenson scored on a 20-yard fumble recovery to give the Jays the win. Jervontyae Warmack blocked an extra point, while Billy Brehe had one sack. Jefferson City is back in action on Sept. 11 at Oakland Junior.

Darts tournament set



The Central Missouri Dart Association will hold its annual Memorial Dart Tournament on Saturday. Signup starts at 10 a.m. at the Roy Sone 1003 VFW Post on East Capital Street.
