They say your best shot at finding someone is within the first 48 hours (I believe). Very, very odd. Either you want her found or you don't. Boy, if it was my kid, I would hold a press conference immediately. But thats just me. "

I've seen Amber alerts in the past on parental kidnappings. Sure would be helpful to know the rest of the story on this...as usual, the NT will not be doing any reporting unless the CCSD issues a press release.

My computer has spellcheck. Can I be a NT reporter? "

" Why blame Cole County for the lack of media frenzy? Local law enforcement can only do so much, it's up to the local media outlets to give a story as much or as little coverage as they want. If Jeff City or Columbia news wants a press conference, they'll ask for one. If they want updates, they'll ask.

If you are disappointed with the lack of coverage regarding this incident, call your local media, not your local sheriff. Blaming the sheriff's department for lack of media coverage is like blaming the media for lack of police services. "

If you think you're going to find breaking news of any sort on the Cole Co. Sheriff's Dept. website, think again. Cole Co., like many local law enforcement agencies, don't use their website as an effective tool for up-to-the-minute details of ongoing incidents. Most departments in mid-Missouri rely on the media to cover the events and pass along updates. I don't know if this is a product of lack of IT professionals to constantly update a site or just departments being behind the times. "

I'm scared to death for this girl! Did she meet someone on the internet and run away with him/her? Very scary to think of the "what ifs". There are flyers up all over town in different businesses, but my guess is she's no longer in town (or in the State)..what I don't understand is why not issue an missing persons to other cities/counties/states? " well put, dw.
The public's right to know has to be tempered with what is best in light of the investigation at hand.
Undoubtedly, not every detail is being discussed publicly. That's standard practice. If someone doesn't want to be found, its pretty easy to stay "lost". Its a big world. Unless she makes some contact with a friend then they contact LE, she's going to likely stay lost for as long as she wants to. At 11, her perception of the realities of the world are pretty naive. She could be safe, but she could have put her faith in someone that doesn't have her best interest at heart too. "

This family is a family everyone wants to have. They're there for each other, there's love, and kindness. The issue is not why the media didn't put it out sooner, what's wrong with the sheriff's department, or even what the parents did or didn't do. It's now about finding Bailey and returning her to a family who loves her. We can place blame when she's home, but for now we need to think of nothing but her. "

BB611679 wrote on Aug 7, 2008 10:33 PM:

I am very concerned for Bailey, we live in a terrible society, but we all will pray for her safe return as I do. Never giving up hope for her. Look at Shawn Hornbeck, look at all the other children who have returned safely. But the important thing to remember is that her family does in deed love her very much. There could be many reasons why they didn't come out to the media. "

I know the family haven't spoken to them in 4-5yrs, but they are good people. As far as the dad, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. There is some reason why they didn't get this investigation out to people right away. The family I know loves that little girl, and when I knew her she was the sweetest thing. She has been through a lot and so has her family, but there is no doubt in my mind that they are out there looking for her right now. "

For all we know some pedophile is on the loose gathering up children. I just don't understand waiting a week and then not giving the public (who they have asked for help) more that 4 sentences to go on. It doesn't say anything about runaway or abduction in the article so excuse some of us if we have jumped to conclusions. There haven't been any updates on the situation from NT. I doubt seriously that the sheriffs dept gave NT more information and NT just excluded those details. "

From what is being reported(she left a note saying she was running away) this does not fall under an Amber alert. If that is the truth from what I read on Amber Alerts webpage this does not meet Amber alert guideline. It is also crazy to think that Greg White(or any other L.E.)would not have used the system if they SHOULD(or COULD)have. My prayers go out to Bailey's parents and family. Since there have been no updates to this story, I am assuming there is nothing to report (i.e. no leads). And let's flood the sheriff's dept with angry calls about their ineptitude. They have nothing better to do....like talk to the girl's friends, investigate leads, and bring Bailey home. The problem here isn't the media or the cops. It's the mob-mentality of uninformed people making a bad situation worse. I have an 11 yr old daughter. " This makes my blood boil. Seems everyone was more concerned about the Cole County Fair than the welfare of a child. Check out the article about Mr. White and the fair. Again, makes my blood boil. This darling girl was 11, not 16, not 17. Sick. "

" We are such a small community here in Jefferson City and the surrounding areas, I cant imagine why NO NEWS AGENCY picked this story up and why they would not give us more information to go on. Including the JC News Tribune!!! Its not like we are a metropolitan city that deals with things like this every day. It happens so rarely around here that this is something our community should have been alerted about, instead of telling me how Anita Randolp was appointed to the city council ON THE FRONT PAGE. Im more concerned about an endangered youth than an old lady running for city council!!! "

" oh, by the way, the mother reported her missing THAT day. A week of White's office sitting on their hands has probably cost her life. "

" I posted the original comment questioning the lack of an amber alert. i called the sheriffs dept asking about lack of AA and apparently,no, she doesn't fall into the guidlines, however why would the sheriff's dept wait a week to utilize the many resources it that it DOES have? News Tribune, Radio Stations, Television stations- all would have been just as helpful as an AA a week ago. An 11 year old girl is in as much danger whether she ran away or was abducted. Sheriff White is up for re election right now, until this incident I had no opinion. He has just made my decision for me. "

cjs wrote on Aug 5, 2008 12:53 PM:

" That does explain the lack of the Amber Alert - but not why anyone would wait for a week to let the public know to be on the look-out. When dealing with a child this age, regardless if they are abducted, they are at risk when being out on their own. As others have said, there is more to this story than we're hearing. Makes me think of woman who waited a month before reporting her daughter missing - and we still don't knwo where she is. "

Like july 30th??? What is going on??? "

" The story on KRCG this morning at 6 said the girl left a note saying she was running away. That's all that I've heard. I can't imagine any parent waiting that long to get word out about their child. There must be MUCH more to this story, obviously.
My prayers to this little girl and her family! "

" KMIZ just reported she is a runaway. I have little girls and I just could not imagine. I hope they find this child quickly. I don't see how an 11-year old would be resourceful enough to stay gone for a week without the help of an adult........ I guess that's the part that scares me the most about this story. "

hmarie775 wrote on Aug 4, 2008 10:39 PM:

" I am hoping the NT will give us a deeper story about this, it seems so non chalant about the whole thing. A missing 11 year old should be a HUGE deal!! HOw is she missing? Did she wander off, run away, taken by a noncustodial parent? 11 years olds don't go "missing" without something major going on. Where are the details? Should we be worried about our own kids? Is there a kidnapper on the loose? WHAT IS GOING ON?

I hope whatever the circumstance that she is found and safe at home soon!!! "

" You're exactly right truthseeker. There are some pretty specific guidelines for entering someone into the Amber Alert system. I don't know that details of this case but it may not have met the criteria. Its a great system, and frankly it is because of the rules involved. An Amber Alert is rare so when one is broadcast, there's a lot of eyes that start actively looking. Right or wrong, people tend to get kind of immune to things that happen every day. "

truthseeker wrote on Aug 4, 2008 7:28 PM:

" I pray for this young lady and her family that she be found safe. I do not know her or the circumstances but this unfortunately may not qualify for an Amber Alert if she wasnt abducted...
From the MO state website under AMBER alert portal(paraphrased)
"Although AMBER stands for Americas Missing Broadcast Emergency Response it is not a system for simply missing children. It is specifically for abducted children. Minimum Federal guidelines which most states(including MO)follow before Amber can be issued include,(1) L.E. must confirm abduction of a child under 17(someone had to witness the abduction)
(2)child is at risk of serious injury or death (3)must have sufficient decriptive info of child, abductor and and abductors vehicle.
Again I pray for this girls safe return. "

" as a parent of a child the same age ,i would have personally made sure her picture and story was all over the news. was there a note telling them not to ,or is there any relative involment? i pray for this childs safe return, but someone (whoever waited so long) has really messed up the chance of helping this child. there has to be more to this story ,i want to know also where was the amber alert? "

" this is pathetic,, how can we possibly help 7 days later ?? .. a person could drive to LA and back in 7 days.. this is totally un-acceptable, and i think we need to know who is responsible !!.. we created amber alert to prevent this very thing !!,, how sad,,, how WRONG !, i hope someone , beside the 11 year old girl pays for this , STUPID, ERROR.. so, SAD "

" I must agree that a week has passed and we are just now learning of this missing child? Surely there is a reason; perhaps it was not reported prior, etc. Then I have to wonder, too, why more info is not in this publication; just appears to me that the more info the public has, the better??? I will be praying for her and her family! "
