sports@newstribune.com Some views on Bonds, Favre, the All-Star game, Cavendish (who?) and Tiger
Oops, that didn't take long.
Rats.
With that out of the way, let's take a look at the week ahead.
* Will work for food ... and millions and millions of dollars.
Barry Bonds remains in the news, as he's still looking for a team to play for. Nobody wants him. He's considered a cancer. Hmmm, wonder why? The man with 762 career home runs is the poster boy for baseball's black eye.
Cheating.
Maybe he can co-author a book with Roger Clemens. It could be called: “Needles are scary, pointy things that hurt: Why we never took steroids, the Stories of Barry and Roger.”
I'd buy it.
* Set me free.
Brett Favre - what is he now, 58? - wants to keep playing football. He wants out of Green Bay, but Green Bay won't let him go. Favre wearing another jersey would be like the Jack in the Box guy wearing Ronald McDonald's outfit.
It just isn't right.
Enough already. In the Packers' playoff loss to the Giants in January, Favre looked cold and old. He's done. It would be a shame if he were remembered as football's version of Rickey “I'm the greatest of all time!” Henderson.
Know when to say when, Brett.
* This time, it counts.
No, it doesn't. Major League Baseball may try to trick us into thinking that Tuesday night's All-Star game means something - the winner gets the home-field advantage for the World Series - but it's simply a glorified pick-up game played at half-speed, mostly by guys who don't want to be there.
This time, like last time, who cares?
* Who cares, Part II.
Ripped straight from Saturday's Associated Press story: “Mark Cavendish of Britain has won a Tour de France stage for the second time after a sprint finish in the rain. Kim Kirchen of Luxembourg still wears the yellow jersey as overall leader.”
I don't know about you, but I'm on the edge of my seat. They should give the riders sling-shots to fire at each other, that would be worth watching.
* I can beat you on one leg.
Golf's third major, the British Open, will be played this week. No Tiger Woods, who was last seen winning the U.S. Open on a torn-up knee and a broken leg. That fabulous feat, however, said as much about the weakness of Tiger's competition as it did about his greatness.
But with no Tiger, this British Open will be like playing the Super Bowl with no quarterback. Or cheerleaders. Yawn. TV ratings will be slightly higher than the Tour de France, but not by much.
Elvis has left the building. And with him, most of the interest has left, too.
How can they bring back the magic? Two words: Sling shots.
“Sergio Garcia has just plunked Jim Furyk on his backside right in the middle of his swing! Furyk is down! Now that one had to hurt!”
That would be worth watching.
