Circuit court actions

Published: Friday, June 27, 2008 11:08 PM CDT
Cole County Presiding Judge Pat Joyce recently sentenced a Jefferson City man to four years in prison.

Jeremy L. Trammell, 37, 2812 Kenborg Hills Road, was charged in July 2007 for leaving the scene of a vehicle accident and driving while revoked. He was convicted of the charges after a jury trial in March.

In other recent court action, Judge Joyce:

€ Placed a Jefferson City resident on five years' supervised probation. Lavell Clark, 23, 708 Washington, pled guilty to a felony theft charge that was filed in June 2007.

€ Placed a St. Louis man on five years' unsupervised probation after he pled guilty to failing to pay child support. Bruce Doss, 39, was charged in January 2006, court records said.

€ Revoked the probation of a Jefferson City woman and sentenced her to five years in prison. Yoshi Rucker, 24, 12 Jackson, pled guilty to September and November 2005 charges of distribution of a controlled substance and also to a June 2006 charge of forgery.

€ Revoked the probation of a Fulton man and sentenced him to two years in prison. Beau Brinker, 28, pled guilty to a charge of possession of a controlled substance from October 2004.

€ Revoked the probation of a Jefferson City woman and sentenced her to 120 days shock time in prison. Sarah Lynch, 19, pled guilty to a July 2006 charge of second-degree burglary.

€ Sentenced a Miami, Fla., man to four years in prison, with credit for time served, after he pled guilty to receiving stolen property. Jack Vanmarter, 34, was charged in May, court records said.

Cole County Judge Richard Callahan recently placed a Jefferson City teen on probation.

Kiley Carpenter, 17, pled guilty to second-degree burglary and was placed on four years' supervised probation, ordered to pay $200 restitution and perform 100 hours of community service .

According to information from the Cole County Sheriff's Department, Carpenter and Amanda Peters, 18, stole items from a residence in the 5700 block of Elston Road on Nov. 24, 2007.

Apparently, the teens used a credit card taken from that residence to purchase items at a McDonald's restaurant. Authorities were able to get their license plate from a video at the restaurant.

The two also reportedly took lock boxes from St. George Catholic Church in Osage County. All the property taken in the burglaries was recovered.

Peters' case is scheduled to go to trial next month, court records said.

In other recent court action, Callahan:

€ Ordered a prison term for one man and a probation term for another in connection with crimes that involved the same victim.

Franklin Gilmore, 33, was sentenced Monday to three years in prison after he pled guilty to second-degree statutory rape.

On Tuesday, Dwenard Brown, 47, was placed on five years' supervised probation for the same charge, but also must serve 60 days shock detention in the Cole County Jail. Both men were charged in March 2007 and indicted by the Cole County Grand Jury a month later.

Court documents show there were two separate incidents in March 2007 where the suspects attacked the victim who was under the age of 17 at the time.

€ Sentenced a Jefferson City man to six months in the Cole County Jail after he pled guilty to selling cocaine. Brandon Stewart, 27, 805 Nicole, was charged in December 2006 and February 2007.

€ Placed a Jefferson City man on two years' supervised probation after he pled guilty to possessing cocaine. Robert Mahlan Jr., 43, 6309 Business 50 West, was charged in June 2007.

€ Placed a Jefferson City man on four years' supervised probation after he pled guilty to DWI, persistent offender. Steven Long, 54, 6836 Business 50 West, must also serve 10 days shock detention in the Cole County Jail. He was charged in November 2007, court records said.

€ Placed a Jefferson City man on three years' unsupervised probation after he pled guilty to driving while revoked and DWI prior offender. Robert Mahan Jr., 27, 213 Jackson, must also serve 90 days shock time, with credit for time served, in the Cole County Jail and have an ignition interlock placed in his vehicle, court records said.

€ Placed a Russellville woman on five years' supervised probation after she pled guilty to various charges. Marie Shoults, 26, must also serve five days shock detention in the Cole County Jail and pay restitution. Shoults was charged in with identity theft, forgery, felony theft and passing a bad check in 2007.

" Mikemo,
It will never happen, nice dream though lol. Why? because the Hug A Thugs and there liberal lobbyist will shread your point into obilivion with all the dirty money they put forth, I am pretty sure some of that is Big City Drug Money;get my point? "

" That way if there is a conviction, payment is already secured. Bonus, the cost of inprisonment gets pro-actively shifted from the tax payer to the convicted criminal. Sheriff Joe in Arizona would be so proud... "

" They say we can't afford the prison space. Here's an idea, when people are arrested, they post a bond to ensure that they will show for court. The amount of that bond is set by the judge. It's common practice for the court to deduct court costs and other fees (including attorney's fees) from that bond when the case ends.

How tough would it be to raise the bond amount to include the likely board bill IF the arrestee is convicted of the offence? If the crime they are arrested for carries a possible penalty of 364 days in jail, make the bond amount include 364 days board bill. If the arrestee is found innocent, refund it. "

" I think the judges should be held civilly liable for every dwi persistant offender that gets probation and then goes on to commit any alcohol related accident. "

" Cast, The state makes more money with a mostly full prison, did not say max out. State funds move back /forth all the time its called appropriated funds or Bills, Missouri is experts at moving these type of funds ask your congressman or woman they know it all to well. lol

Boscoe,
your right thats how its set now, to rehab the offender quickly, it work for most inmates. Its still new system, Iam sure some or most on the "Gangsta for Life" will be back the States housing Units on new charges. They say, "I caught another case". Interesting enough said. "

" Cast,
Its cost the same for AA/NA criminals in prison as others inmates, they go to there reg. scheduled class, with CCW, CCA,etc. that are always present normally. There AA classes are mostly done on weekends & evenings with Leader AA trained inmate. The program is mainly ran mostly by inmates that are locked up with them.

There is enough money to Jail state/ county inmates, etc. If you cut them loose earlier? The federal funding to corrections goes down due to empty beds, I know I'm a corrections officer for 12 yrs. now. "

" The DWI offenders need to do the time for their crime. I'll gladly pay for their 3 hots and a cot time, because doing so saves someones life. Once shame on them, twice shame on the judge for letting them out. A leopard never changes his/her spots. "

" I just read an article the other day about Missouri is reducing its inmate population dramatically. Guess the CATCH AND RELEASE offender program is doing its job. "

" Our jails are full.

There is not enough money to jail everybody.

More crime is committed because criminals know there is no room in the jails to keep them.

Like an old toothless watchdog, the criminals get gummed up a little bit sometimes. "

" Does this mean Mr. Gilmore and Mr. Brown will be required to register as sexual offenders? Mr. Brown's address is listed as High Street--very close to East School. I guess he will be moving. "
