Gov. Matt Blunt's brother is holding a fundraiser for Republican gubernatorial candidate Kenny Hulshof, but the governor says that's no indication of whom he thinks should replace him.
Blunt announced in early January that he would not seek re-election.
Hulshof and State Treasurer Sarah Steelman are among those seeking the Republican nomination. Attorney General Jay Nixon, a Democrat, also is running for governor.
Besides being his brother, Andy Blunt has been an important political adviser for Matt Blunt. Andy Blunt served as chairman of his brother's 2004 gubernatorial campaign.
But Blunt said his brother's support for Hulshof does not mean he also backs Hulshof.
“The truth is we don't control one another, and he's a made an independent decision and he's a smart guy,” Blunt said.
The fundraiser also attracted several significant Republican organizers and fundraisers.
Members of the organizing committee included Alison Craighead, the wife of the executive director for the Missouri Republican Party; Dan Mehan, the president of the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Republican attorney Harvey Tettlebaum; lobbyist and former Blunt aide Jewell Patek; and Jefferson City lawmakers Sen. Carl Vogel and Rep. Rep. Mark Bruns.
Tom Kolb, co-owner of Jefferson City Oil Co. and an investor with Andy Blunt in a Carroll County ethanol plant, also was on the committee for the fundraiser.
Hulshof spokesman Scott Baker said the campaign isn't presuming Andy Blunt's efforts also signal the governor's endorsement.
“He made himself available and made the offer, and we were happy to accept,” Baker said.
The Wednesday evening reception was to be held at the Jefferson City home of Dave and Tami Turner.
