Big, black cat - jaguar or leopard - killed in southern Missouri

Published: Thursday, May 22, 2008 7:19 AM CDT
NEOSHO, Mo. (AP) - A large, black animal - either a jaguar or a leopard - that apparently either lost its way or was dumped by someone, was shot and killed by a deputy after a woman reported the animal pawing at her door.

Cpl. Donn Hall of the Newton County Sheriff's Department responded Monday to a call from a woman saying a “black panther” was on its hind legs at her door, said Capt. Richard Leavens. When Hall got out of his car, the animal charged at him.

“He fired on it and wounded it,” Leavens said. “It ran past him to the end of the driveway and then came back at him.”

When the cat charged a second time, Hall fired additional shotgun blasts and then pulled out his .45-caliber handgun.

“It took several shots with that to get one that took effect,” Leavens said. Hall was not injured.

The department called an officer from state Conservation Department, who said the animal's species was not immediately clear. It appeared that the cat was unaccustomed to living in the wild, the officer said.

“This most likely was a kept animal that either had been dumped out or had gotten away,” Leavens said. The animal's claws had been surgically removed.

He said there was speculation the animal might have been on the loose in the wake of the recent tornado damage in the region.

James Dixon, a wildlife damage biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation, said the animal, which weighed about 50 pounds, appeared to have been well-fed, even fat, perhaps from having been kept in a cage.

But its stomach seemed empty, which might explain its behavior, he said.

“He could have just been coming around looking for a handout,” Dixon said. “Who knows what it was thinking?”

Dixon said more research is needed to determine what the animal is, but he said it's either a leopard or a jaguar.

Leopards are native to Africa and Asia, with black leopards found in Africa. Jaguars are indigenous to South America, Central America and certain parts of the southwestern United States. But black jaguars are practically unheard of in the United States.

Dixon said it will require skull and teeth measurements to ascertain the species. Tissue samples could be taken if those measurements are not conclusive, he said.

" This is so sad, this poor animal was hungry and looking for food. It was just acting on instinct. I do not fault the officer, he just just what he thought he had to do. I would assume this animal was being kept illegally. If this was someone's pet, and it got out during the storms, I would think they would have reported it. However if they did not have the legal permits, I'm sure this animal will remained unclaimed. It is just so sad such a beautiful creature had to loose his life when they are already endangered. "

" Sprint also says that she/he has been in the wild lots of times and never been charged by an animal. That's all well and good, but don't think that it can't happen. And it would be very unwise to take that kind of attitude to areas where there has been human encroachment on wild cat ranges or in areas where there are bears with cubs. You'll end up dead. Residents of certain areas of California and hikers in Yosemite will back me up on that. "

" Sprint10h has already stated that nothing will change her/his opinion, and that's all well and good. But that opinion is just plain unfair and not well-reasoned. You'd be hard pressed to find a bigger animal lover than myself. It hurts my heart that this cat was killed. But that officer had no way of knowing that this had been a captive animal or that it had been declawed (the person that did that is the one that needs shooting, frankly). Police officers don't carry animal tranq guns as a matter of course. And even if he had had one, using as the animal is charging at you is usually too late. They don't work "instantly" like you see in the movies. "

" Sprint: just wondering, what exactly is your belief in the human kind? "

Citizen-JC wrote on May 22, 2008 1:28 PM:

" Sprint -- I hope you have padded walls in your world. 1. Cops don't carry tranq guns. ONLY animal control has them and even THEY don't carry them all the time. 2. Would you rather have read how the cat mauled the cop only to have the cop say "well, it charged me, but I didn't shoot until I was certain it had claws...Of course by then it was too late". 3. If the animal was rabid it MOST CERTAINLY COULD EASILY CHARGE! I have seen it happen. 4. A keystone predator is not just "some animal in the woods". It is a CARNIVORE. One that has instincts to kill and eat animals the size of HUMANS. "

" You have to think about what kind of resources the officer had at the time. Not to many of them carry tranquilizer guns on them. "

" Can't blame the officer, but sould have been nice to have trapped it and moved to a big cat facility. "

Sprint10h wrote on May 22, 2008 9:58 AM:

" That is true about the idiot that tried to make a pet of it, but a tranquilizer gun would have been adequate. But, no lets have a trophy by shooting a defenseless animal, it didn't even have claws. I see lots of wild animals in the woods and not once have I been "charged" by any animal. "

truthseeker wrote on May 22, 2008 9:26 AM:

" Dont blame the officer who had to take action against a dangerous animal, blame the idiots who try to make pets out of wild animals and then release them when they can no longer take care of them. It is maybe possible it escaped but at one time I would say this was someones pet since its claws had been removed surgically. "

" If we would act upon criminals like we do animals in need then that owuld probably cut down on the crime all over the United States. It sickens me every time I read about a animal being shot immediately and the cop alwasys says, "The animal charged me!" Another example of a wanna be top cop with a gun trying to be important. These comments are my belief and no amount of trashing my opinion will sway me or effect me in any way but reinforce my belieif in the human kind. "
