That was the case for South Callaway's Eric Frazee on Saturday, as he scorched the field while winning the Class 2 boys 300-meter hurdles in the Class 1-2 MSHSAA Track and Field Championships at Dwight T. Reed Stadium.
Frazee was the only competitor to break 40 seconds in either the prelims or finals, as he captured the title with a time of 39.62. He said he was happier for his school than himself.
“It feels really good,” he said. “... Whenever people think of South Callaway, they'll hopefully think of a state champion.”
The win also clinched goals for a pair of Frazees - Eric and his coach and father, Bill.
“It means a lot,” Eric Frazee said. “For a high school track runner, it's everybody's dream to be on top of the podium, and it means a lot to me.
“My dad said to see somebody from his school on the top of the podium would feel good.”
Not bad a bad way to go out for a senior who didn't feel very confident heading into the race.
“Before the race, I wasn't really feeling good,” Frazee said. “I was kind of worried. My legs were a little bit tired.
“But when I came out of the blocks and went over the first hurdle, I felt really good. ... I knew I had a chance, so I kicked it in and beat everybody down the stretch.”
Frazee finished eighth in the 110-meter hurdles, single-handedly accounting for all of the Bulldogs' points over the weekend. South Callaway ended up tied for 22nd with 11 points.
The only other area competitor to win a state championship Saturday was also in the Class 2 boys, as Southern Boone's Jacob White won the 400-meter dash (50.54).
“It's awesome - it's one of the greatest experiences of my life,” White said. “That's my fastest time all year and I broke my school record, so I'm pretty satisfied.”
White also came in fourth in the 800-meter run (1:58.94), scoring all of Southern Boone's team points as the Eagles finished tied for 18th with 14 points.
In other Class 2 boys action, Tipton's Tanner Edwards placed in two events, finishing third in the 200-meter dash (22.67) and seventh in the 100-meter dash (11.32).
The Linn Wildcats had three medalists Saturday. Kiefer Smith finished third in the pole vault (13-3), Ryan Meyer came in fifth in the 1600-meter run (4:30.27) and Steven Hoffman placed eighth in the discus.
Also, Fatima's Josh Tellman came in sixth in the 400-meter dash (51.19).
Linn had the top team finish for area schools in Class 2, tying for 16th with 15 points. Tipton tied for 32nd with 8 points and Fatima tied for 37th with 6 points.
In the Class 1 boys competition, the top area result was turned in by Vienna's Collin Engelbrecht, who finished in a four-way tie for second (6-0) in the high jump.
“(The finish) was a little bit of a surprise, and I definitely wasn't expecting a four-way tie for second,” Engelbrecht said.
That was just part of an odd high jump competition, as there was also a four-way tie for seventh.
“I thought it went pretty well - (6-0) was two inches below my (personal record) I set this year, so that's pretty good for me.”
Vienna finished in 19th with 14.7 team points, as Jesse Messersmith added a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter dash (11.50).
The Chamois Pirates finished tied for 16th, as they scored 16 points.
Jason Rost led the Pirates with a fifth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles (42.22), while Tyler Malone was eighth in the 1600-meter run (4:45.08) and Cody Hemeyer was eighth in the shot put (44-73/4).
Chamois' 4x100-meter relay team finished sixth (46.15).
Tipton's Lori Mortenson had the top finish among area girls in Class 2, as she finished second in the 100-meter dash (12.58).
Mortenson also finished eighth in the 200-meter dash (25.99), as the Lady Cardinals finished 19th with 14.5 points.
Also in Class 2, Fatima's Paige Becker finished sixth in the discus (117-4) and Southern Boone's Rebeca Barajas was seventh in the long jump (15-111/4).
Southern Boone and Fatima tied for 48th with 3 points apiece.
Vienna's 4x100-meter relay team had the best area finish in the Class 1 girls competition, as the Lady Eagles came in second (52.90).
