“I'm ecstatic,” said Clyde Lear, chairman and chief executive of Learfield Communications and head of Citizens Supporting Integrity, the leading opposition group. “The voters of Jefferson City just don't want to have casinos in our town.”
In Jefferson City council races, the winners were Richard Koon in Ward 2, Brian Crane in Ward 3, and Dan Klindt in Ward 5. In Ward 4, incumbent Kevin Brown, who advocated putting the gambling issues to a public vote, was handily defeated by challenger Carrie Carroll.
Brown thinks his stance on the gambling issue contributed to his defeat.
“Without question it had some impact,” he said. “But if an elected official is only concerned with self-preservation and re-election, then I'm not sure that's the right kind of person to have on the council.”
Meanwhile, voters approved an issue annexing land in the vicinity of Route C and Missouri 179 along the south edge of Jefferson City. It received more than the two-thirds majority it needed to pass.
Voters picked Brad Scrivner as a new member of the Jefferson City School District board, and returned incumbents Duane Schreiman and Tami Turner to board positions.
