Fireworks fizzle?

By Jeff Haldiman

Salute to America loses sponsor for finale

Published: Thursday, April 3, 2008 4:06 PM CDT
The fireworks show for this year's Capital City Salute to America will take place on the Fourth of July, but who will foot the bill is still in question.

At a meeting of the foundation Board of Directors on Wednesday, members were told that corporate sponsorship for the fireworks and other events has not been forthcoming because businesses are dealing with the economic slowdown.

The foundation is a not-for-profit group that oversees the July 4th festivities.

“The community has come to expect good entertainment at this event,” said Festival Coordinator Jill Snodgrass. “We started out not having to pay for a lot of our offerings and that built up our coffers to get us to the point where we could offer more things. It's disappointing that we could be backsliding.”

The foundation is in the last year of a contract that calls for $23,000 to be paid for fireworks. Without corporate sponsorship, the foundation will have to pay off the contract. Although it does have a line of credit, the bill would leave the group with about $4,000 in debt to its money market account.

Financial constraints also are preventing the foundation from booking some entertainment, although the main entertainment for the night of the Fourth of July looks to be in place. The main problem likely will be no major entertainment act for July 3, but options are being considered.

Opening ceremonies and the Little Mr. and Miss contest still will be featured that night, along with bands performing on Main Street and in the beer garden.

Despite these concerns, Snodgrass pointed out that they are going to be offering many things, including the brand new Pit Row. This area, sponsored by Eldon Speedway, will feature all things racing from NASCAR, watercraft, motorcycles and bicycles. It will be located on High Street between Madison and Jefferson.

There will also be a Heritage Village featured in the Lewis and Clark Monument area with re-enactors.

" If this town is thriving so much, why do they have to rely on a sponsor for their 4th of July finale. More importantly, does/did that sponsorship result in any special perks/considerations for the company? California and Eldon put on spectacular shows for town their sizes...especially Eldon...and I believe both are paid for by the city (I know California's is). What does the taxes go for in JC? Infrastructure is old and failing, streets are sad, apparently they aren't paying for at least some city events...so where's the $$ going? "

" Maybe the Convention and Visitors Bureau can cover the $4000 out of their funds. Doesn't the CVB get a whole lot of tax money from the lodging tax, as well as annual appropriations from the city council and the county commission?

A few years ago they found $10,000 of our tax money to pay for a bicycle race that never happened in Jefferson City. Surely they could cover a little $4,000 expenditure for the fireworks contract. "

go_fish wrote on Apr 8, 2008 3:26 PM:

" Good idea Boscoe, but there's this pesky little issue of a $23,000 contract that needs to be solved. Until then, there needs to be about a $4,000 cut in other areas, be it entertainment or otherwise. A reduction in the number of law enforcement personnel standing around in the street twiddling their thumbs might be a good start. Numerous times I've seen groups of 8 or more just shooting the bull. I'm sure there are other areas where if a little bit is cut here and there, it will add up to the $4,000 and still achieve a successful event. It doesn't have to be an all or nothing proposition. Just common sense cuts across the board. "

I for one say cut out the " major entertainment" and just do the fireworks, if entertainment is needed then hire local bands to perform..all this talk about keeping things local then do the same with the entertainment..JC has a lot of great local bands minus the high cost. "

In my opinion, the overall mission of a community 4th of July celebration has drowned in the quest for corporate branding. This seemed to begin when Jill Snodgrass took over the coordination reins. I don't lay it all at her feet, though, as she must have enthusiastic support from others, given her long tenure at the helm.

I propose the organizers constrict the festivities in keeping with the constricted budget. "

I don't know why people keep saying state workers are not paid well, or why Jefferson City doesn't have good-paying jobs. Your raise of $56 a month (before taxes) will probably nearly cover the increase in your health insurance for next year too. "

I know there are good original acts out there, but they don't seem to make the 4th celebration. Even the main stage acts had to start somewhere. I believe this is more than just a recession and it's not over yet. The effects of diesel prices alone has not fully hit the markets yet and there will be more inflation. As for the fireworks, I can take it or leave it, they are only 30-45 minutes long. Even using what they can afford, the committe could go back to shooting one or two at a time instead of the "sky concert" theme that uses dozens of shells for each song. "

Just look at Booneville as example. They have said the city has grown due to the casino. JC is just so conservative that it won't allow for growth. And when sum1 does want a new business here, it usually goes under. Unless it's a bar and then helps in getting $ from all the drunks(DWIs). Keep it local huh? So Col, LOTO, and other towns are 'local' then? Nice to know. Guess JC isn't. "
