Steam pipe failure damages Lincoln University building

According to fire department reports, the initial call came in around 5 a.m. at Anthony Hall.
It was first reported as a structure fire with smoke coming from the basement, but when crews arrived, they found smoke or steam coming from the exhaust system in the boiler room in the basement. They also found that the building's sprinkler system was activated.
Two crews tried to make entry and were turned back out because of the steam and high temperatures in the room. Fire officials contacted LU maintenance and they turned off the steam supply system to the building.
Approximately 70 students had to be evacuated and a second alarm was called in until the exact cause was determined.
Failure of a cast iron cap on a steam pipe was determined to be the cause.
Damage was contained mainly to the basement, but because the sprinkler system had been on for a long time, there was damage to carpeting and sheet rock walls in the lower level of the building.
Students eventually were allowed back in. There were a couple reports of minor burns to firefighters, but no other injuries were reported.
