Boil advisory issued for some customers

Published: Thursday, March 20, 2008 11:30 AM CDT
A 10-inch water main has been damaged by recent flooding on the Moreau River and an estimated 200 to 300 customers of Cole County Public Water District No. 2 may be without service for an undetermined amount of time.

On Wednesday, crews for the water district, Missouri American Water, Cole County Public Works, Osage Fire Protection District and Jefferson City Fire Department worked at Wardsville Road and Lincoln University Farm to install a temporary connection with Missouri American to provide service as soon as possible to those affected.

At an emergency meeting of the water district's board of director's Wednesday afternoon, District Manager Randy Kay said the customers who now have water service are going to continue to get safe drinking water.

After service is restored, people affected by the outage will be under a boil order advisory until further notice.

As of Thursday morning water district officals report the streets under boil order are:

-Mehmert Place
-Parts of Green Meadow
-Grand Valley
-Rudy Court
-Rudy Lane
-Wardsville Road
-Moreau Terrace
-Tyler Ridge
-Clover Lane

Kay said they are asking customers limit their water use after service is restored.

Kay added that customers living on Green Meadow Road from 2237 to the LU farms will not have their water restored until the river goes down and crews can get to the valve that controls their line. The valve is now under water.

If you are an elderly or disabled customer of District 2, the district will have bottled water and gallons of distilled water available. To get these services, call the main office at 635-7011 during normal business hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. or 635-5332 after regular hours.

District officials said this may be one of the most serious problems the district has ever faced.

" As a past employee of District 2, I have to be proud of the men and women who run their office. District 2 and Missouri Water Company have an excellent working relationship. If there is anyway for the two of these companies to help each other out, they will do it. People don't know it but all of the local water companies have interconnects that will allow each other to have water service in any emergency. Interconnections are expensive to install and maintain, so there very many of them. With this type of emergency, an interconnection between both of these companies may be an alternative now and in the future, but Randy Kay will get the job done. "

" First, it is very unlikely that District 2 will be getting their bottled/distilled water from MAWC. MAWC does not provide that type of service. They are a public utility company not a bottled water company.
Second, what exactly is MAWC supposed to provide to its customers besides clean, safe water and good customer service. The cost of water here is incredibly cheap and MAWC has an excellant service record. I have a cousin in California that pays $300 a month for water. And I don't work for MAWC. If you only know what some Missouri water customers in the rural areas have to put upwith in terms of service you would be grateful for MAWC. "

" But, knowing MAWC, how much are they going to charge for the bottled or distilled water, and how much markup are they figuring into the price? The MAWC company doesn't do anything FOR the customer, so I'm just wondering what isn't being said in the generous offer of providing water to customers "
