Man taken for evaluation after making threats to harm himself

Published: Friday, March 7, 2008 3:11 PM CST
A 53- year-old Jefferson City man was taken to St. Mary's Health Center for mental evaluations after allegedly threatening to kill himself with a .22 caliber hunting rifle Thursday afternoon and causing police to talk him out of harming himself.

Police reports show the incident occurred around 12:15 p.m. at a residence in the 300 block of Lafayette.

A call came in to the Callaway County Dispatch Center that a man had a gun to his head and the Jefferson City Police Dispatch Center was able to determine his location.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found a vehicle belonging to the man and attempted to make calls to him to ascertain his status.

Eventually, the man came outside with the rifle in his hand and that is when police established and maintained a perimeter around the home. They also blocked traffic from coming in or out of the area.

The man went back inside the home and, after some discussions with police personnel, he threw down his rifle and was taken into custody without incident.

" Wow, they took the picture out. Can you find someone with a NT paper? They sure can't take it out of there. Go to the library if you have to. I commend them for taking it out of the online version but the print is still out there. Good luck. "

" I have a suggestion....as stupid as it might be. I am reading my hometown newspaper on line because I am sitting here without my paper again. I noticed they post a notice at the top of their web page that the paper is running late in certain areas. How hard would this be for you all? I just hate bothering the lady in circulation on Sunday and she always tells me to call if it doesn't get there by 11:00 or noon. Just an itty bitty suggestion that might make their life easier. "

" printing his picture was totally wrong and un-acceptable. i wish they would be as quick to print photos of child molesters, rapists, etc., people who try to harm others for their personal satisfaction or greed ! "

" Yea, I am letting my subscription run out too. Waste of room in my trash can at the end of the week. I am tired of looking at the special people in JC in the paper and the kudos and raving about them. Then they go and put this poor guys picture in the paper. Its sick. It never comes on time anyway, I mean who the heck wants to sip coffee and read the paper at noon. I bet this guys family is heartsick about this. "

" wow this is really low of the jefferson city news tribune.

" When i was reading this story I just couldn't beleive News tribune put his picture in here. I was thinking I have to comment saying how horrible. This guy needs help and now everyone in jc knows what he looks like and will talk about him whenever they see him. I am glad other people think the same way I do. News tribune, This was the wrong story to put in the newspaper "

" That is BS, I can't believe they did that myself. BAD MOVE! This guy needs help, not humiliation. "

" Give the Jefferson City News Tribune a break. As a person that has on occasion suffered "mental issues," I would commit suicide if my picture appeared on the front page in hand cuffs. Then JC Newstribue could then report my suicide! Makes such great news! I am cancelling my subscription to the newstribune. Both the hard copy and their web site always have published articles that I read somewhere else days ago. SHAME SHAME SHAME on you Jefferson City News Tribune for putting this poor man on the front page. Now you are going to be responsible for (now know the name of the person since you also published his address). I hope others cancel subscriptions. "

" I think this is really sad showing this man's picture. And I read the article in the Columbia Tribune about the doctor. Wowza. "

wizen wrote on Mar 7, 2008 10:48 PM:

" you have to wonder why the paper doesn't mind revealing who the man in this story is, yet they don't even cover the story about a local doctor being arrested in Columbia for trying to attack a former colleague's husband. Is it a class issue - does it make it okay to show a picture of this man because he's not from one of the ritzy neighborhoods in town, but god forbid anyone mention Dr. Allen, a JC resident being arrested just yesterday (at least not in their online version. I don't know if it's in the paper version because I stopped getting it over a year ago). "

MrOpinion wrote on Mar 7, 2008 5:32 PM:

" I agree completely. You didn't publish his name, but you sure enough published his picture. Tisk Tisk. "

go_fish wrote on Mar 7, 2008 4:38 PM:

" Shame on you News Tribune for printing this man's picture! He and his mental health issues should not be plastered in the paper regardless of it becoming a somewhat public event. "
