The most striking difference is a change announced previously, as this marks the first time the top two finishers will advance out of round-robin district play. That means 32 teams will advance out of 16 districts in Classes 1-4 and 16 teams will come out of the eight districts in Class 6.
Due to an increase in Class 5 schools, that division was expanded from eight districts to 11.
According to a news release, the MSHSAA Board of Directors decided Thursday that an 11-district format was a better alternative to accommodating the class' 45 schools. In the 11-district setup, one district will include five schools and the other 10 will have four schools. The revised Class 5 playoff bracket will be released at a later date.
District play for all four-team districts will begin in Week 8 - Oct. 17 - while the one five-team district in Class 5 will begin in Week 6 - Oct. 3.
In Class 6, the Jefferson City Jays retain two district foes - Fort Zumwalt West and Hickman - while adding Troy. Troy is one of four schools moving up from Class 5, with Seckman, Lee's Summit and McCluer North being the others.
Fort Zumwalt South leaves Jefferson City's district, as it is one of four schools to drop to Class 5. The others are Oak Park, Vianney and Pattonville.
Also in Class 6, Rock Bridge will play in a district containing Blue Springs, Blue Springs South and Liberty.
In Class 5, a total of 11 schools move up from Class 4 - Parkway Central, Kansas City Northeast, Fort Zumwalt North, Cape Girardeau Central, Rockwood Summit, Webster Groves, Ozark, Nixa, Parkway North, Timberland and 2007 champion Lee's Summit West.
The Helias Crusaders will face a number of familiar foes, albeit different ones, in their Class 4 district. Marshall stays, but gone are Mexico and Sedalia Smith-Cotton. They're replaced by Hannibal and Kirksville.
Kirksville is one of 11 schools moving up to Class 4 from Class 3, with the most notable being three-time Class 3 champion Harrisonville. Also doing so are Kansas City Center, MICDS, Nevada, Bolivar, Grain Valley, Bishop DuBourg, Westminster Christian Academy, Platte County and Westport.
New schools playing in Class 4 are Staley and Fort Zumwalt East. Moving down to Class 4 from Class 5 are Beaumont and Gateway.
Class 3 District 9 will be made up solely of Tri-County Conference teams, as Eldon, Versailles, School of the Osage and California will comprise the district.
That means two of the eight schools moving up from Class 2 to Class 3 will be in that district, as California and Versailles both make the jump.
The other schools moving up are Springfield Catholic, Lutheran: St. Peters, Herculaneum, Mountain Grove, Holden and East Newton.
Moving down to Class 3 from Class 4 are Soldan, Lutheran South and Mexico, while newcomers E.H. Lyle Charter and Missouri Military Academy also join Class 3.
Leaving Class 3 is Kansas City Southeast, which has dropped football.
In Class 2, the Tri-County's Blair Oaks Falcons will take on three Mid-MO Conference schools - Hallsville, South Callaway and Southern Boone.
Hallsville is one of four first-year teams that will play in Class 2. The others are Carnahan, Transportation & Law and Clopton, and Clopton is hosting a cooperative sponsorship with Elsberry.
The final Tri-County team, Warsaw, will play in a Class 2 district with Cole Camp, El Dorado Springs and Skyline.
Moving up to Class 2 from Class 1 are South Shelby, Brentwood, South Harrison, Diamond and Lathrop. Cleveland NJROTC dropped to Class 2 from Class 3 and Van Horn moved all the way down from Class 4.
In Class 1, Tipton will face Sweet Springs, along with two notable foes in Northwest: Hughesville and Sedalia Sacred Heart. This will be the first varsity season for Sacred Heart. Northwest, meanwhile, is a former eight-man program playing 11-man for the first time, and it is a cooperative sponsorship with LaMonte.
Other coops in Class 1 are Sweet Springs and Malta Bend, Lockwood and Golden City, Rich Hill and Hume, and Princeton and Mercer; Windsor and Green Ridge are joining forces in Class 2.
Dropping to Class 1 from Class 2 are St. Mary's: Independence, Schuyler County and Cabool.
Due to the additional playoff game, the first-allowable practice date for the 2008 season will be on Aug. 11. Preseason jamborees will be held Aug. 22-23, and the first-possible contest date will be Aug. 29.
The state championship dates for 2008 are Nov. 28-29, while the event will be held Nov. 27-28 in 2009.
