What a difference a month makes.
“We wrestled really good in some spurts,” Helias coach Travis Reinsch said after the Crusaders dropped a 46-33 decision Wednesday night to the Rock Bridge Bruins at Rackers Fieldhouse.
“We have a few things to touch up on, but we've made a lot of strides. They've been working hard in practice and that's showing up on the mat.”
One way the hard work is showing up is in stamina.
“We're winning a lot of matches purely because of endurance,” Reinsch said. “We push and we push and I think we're in a lot better shape than a lot of teams and that's paying off.”
Blake Wenzel picked up Helias' biggest win of the dual, scoring a 5-0 win over Will Evans at 112 pounds.
“It was a dominating 5-0,” Reinsch said.
After a scoreless first period, Wenzel got an escape and what turned out to be a key takedown to grab a 3-0 lead. That made it a two-move match for Evans and Wenzel wasn't going to let that happen.
“Blake kept pressure on him the whole time,” Reinsch said. “That was a great match by Blake.”
Wenzel scored another takedown in the third period to ensure the win.
Helias' four other wins all came by fall.
€ At 103, Nick Shea won in 1:56 over Taylor Adams.
€ At 119, Cody Linsenbardt won in 3:00 over Jackson Adams.
Linsenbardt led 3-2 after one period, only to have Adams score a quick takedown at the start of the second to take the lead. But the Crusader sophomore scored a reversal and turned that move into a pin.
“That was a big win,” Reinsch said. “You can't say enough about Cody, it was a big match for him in helping out the team as well as helping his self-confidence.
“He should take that match and run with it the rest of the year.”
€ At 130, Josh Predmore continued his fine recent streak since returning after Christmas break after an injury with a win in 3:32 over Matt Reehl.
“He was a big part of the team that was out of the lineup,” Reinsch said of the returning state qualifier. “Josh is hard to wrestle, he's very goal-oriented and he does a good job.”
€ At 160, freshman Clayton Roark won in 1:49 over Miguel Pilsuski.
“Anytime you have a freshman at 160 is tough,” Reinsch said. “You're wrestling a lot of juniors and seniors. But one thing about Clayton, he knows what to do when he has a chance to pin somebody.”
Luke Rose won by forfeit at 285 for the Crusaders.
“Hopefully we can get a match for him sometime,” Reinsch said.
Patrick Beffa sat out at 140 after being injured in Tuesday night's dual at Moberly.
Falling for the Crusaders were Ian Yoakum at 135 (LBF, :54), Seth Jacobs at 140 (LBF, 3:29); David Scheppers at 145 (17-5); Jefferson Thomas at 152 (LBF, 5:10); and Thomas Ledbetter (LBF, 2:58).
Helias was open at 125, 189 and 215.
The Crusaders are back in action Friday and Saturday at the Platte County Invitational. The event features four rounds of pool wrestling - three on Friday, one on Saturday - followed by a bracketed tournament.
Other schools scheduled to participate in the event include Odessa, Harrisonville, Kirksville, Excelsior Springs, Omaha (Neb.) Skutt, Seneca, Marshall, Nevada, Labette County (Kan.) and host Platte County.
In the JV dual Wednesday, six Crusaders won their matches by fall in a 52-12 victory over the Bruins.
