O'Reilly Auto family gives $6 million for Drury University arena

Published: Thursday, December 20, 2007 12:00 AM CST
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - The family that founded O'Reilly Automotive is donating $6 million for a new basketball arena and event center at Drury University.

Fundraising continues for the rest of the $12 million price tag, but groundbreaking is scheduled for this spring. The O'Reilly Family Event Center is expected to open in fall 2009.

The center will have over 4,000 seats, including skyboxes. It will replace Drury's 1940s arena. University officials hope to compete for regional and national tournaments.

The O'Reilly auto parts chain was founded in Springfield in 1957 and now has over 1,700 stores nationwide. O'Reilly family members together hold about 5 percent of shares in the company.
