The phone number 211 officially became that contact Tuesday for 90 percent of the state's population.
Embarq customers and a few others will be connected to the free service by spring, making Missouri the 20th state to have complete coverage.
Call specialists at 211 will help individuals locate health and human service assistance, including food, shelter, job counseling services and health resources.
Those looking for an agency to volunteer with may also call 211 to learn where their support is needed or how to donate.
Mobile phone users may access the same information by dialing 800-427-4626.
This 211 program is possible for Missouri through the United Way of Greater St. Louis in partnership with other United Way organizations, with funding from Missouri Foundation for Health. The greater Kansas City area has had the program since 2006.
“The United Way has always helped people and 211 does just that,” said Linda McAnany, president of the United Way of Central Missouri. “211 is an easy-to-remember number for anyone to call, and it can be used to find information on any health or human service.
“People often don't know where to turn and sometimes go without necessary and readily available services. 211 allows us to give that help in response to a free, confidential call.”
