Desi, owned by Judy Harris, was one of three Dog Scouts from Troop 102 who helped ring-in the celebration. And Schulte, grandson of Jim and Anne Valek, was one of several passers-by who dropped donations in the traditional red kettle.
The kettle campaign began Monday, nearly a month earlier than last year. That's because two collection days - at approximately $5,000 each - were lost due to the winter storm last season, said Capt. Terry Selvage.
The anticipated $165,000 raised through the kettle campaign will be used locally to support The Salvation Army's services throughout the year.
In addition to monetary donations, The Salvation Army encourages civic organizations, church groups and families to donate their time as bell-ringers. Two-hour time slots are available through Dec. 24 at the 17 locations.
“We pray the community sees the need and donates,” Selvage said.
The Salvation Army, 927 Jefferson St., serves people in need through their Center of Hope homeless shelter, the only shelter service for families with children, men and children in the area. Food, clothing vouchers and other services are available through the social services office.
