By postponing the decision at the Monday meeting, the Executive Board declined to take action on the recommendation by the Sale/Relocation Committee to accept the donation of six acres of land in California, Mo., for construction of a new headquarters facility.
The sale of the current headquarters, known as the Baptist Building in Jefferson City, for $1.7 million was approved on Monday. A related motion that an architect be hired was referred to the Audit/Finance Committee for review. A report on that motion is also due at the December meeting of the Executive Board
The Executive Board actions took place on the first day of the MBC annual meeting, held Oct. 29-31, at Tan-Tar-A, Osage Beach, with about 2,000 in attendance.
The theme of the 2007 meeting is “Building Kingdom Focused Churches: Acts 1:8,” placing emphasis on church health with a mixture of worship and business.
According to information originally received from Dr. David Tolliver, interim executive director, on Oct. 9 the MBC Sale/Relocation Committee recommended the sale of the current headquarters (the former Missouri Hotel) and acceptance of six acres of land in California for construction of a new headquarters facility.
According to Tolliver, a former pastor of Friendship Baptist Church, California, one of the issues making the California location attractive is the new four-lane U.S. 50 expected to be completed by late 2009. When completed, the four-lane highway will make travel more convenient from Jefferson City to California. The offer of a donation of six acres of land was made by the owner of the land, local developer Kenny Vaughan.
The Missouri Baptist Convention, dating to 1961, is affiliated with the national Southern Baptist Convention. Missouri Baptists recognize eight regional areas in the state and work cooperatively with 63 Baptist associations, each of which represents a number of Baptist churches in a particular region.
The present headquarters building was purchased and remodeled in 1969. The Executive Board was authorized to sell the Baptist Building at the 2003 annual MBC meeting and look for a new location in Mid-Missouri. Approval was given in 2004 for the search to expand statewide.
The Jefferson City headquarters building is also the location of The Missouri Baptist Foundation and the Missouri Baptist Credit Union.
The six acres of land proposed in the donation is part of a 238-acre commercial and residential development planned by Vaughan, a member of First Baptist Church, California.
