The “Not So Spooky” Preschool Halloween Party attracted a variety of creatures and characters Friday at the Missouri River Regional Library for holiday-themed activities, stories and games.
Mike Vanderiet, the father of the cowboy, age 2, and the chicken, 7 months, said his children visit the library two to three times a month.
“It's a chance to get out of the house and expose them to other kids,” he said.
People may think of library patrons as adults, but in the children's department, a range of programs cater to the school-age and younger crowd.
Midway through the party, head children's librarian Ruth Ann Stratman invited the group to follow her in a Halloween parade through the library. A trail of tiny feet walked through the building and across the street to a behind-the-scenes tour of the library's annex.
Bill Rodgers, library director, said they are working toward expanding the children's programing even further with more events, including activities at bookmobile stops.
“That's one of the missions to the library,” he said. “We're trying to keep people coming to the library. When they get a little older, they start phasing out.”
Emily Schiefereecker, 9, was older than most of the children at the party. She came with her mother and her younger brother, dressed in a Power Ranger suit. Schiefereecker said she visits the library often.
“I love reading and I love all the activities they do,” she said.
Besides the Halloween party, a Fall Family Story Time at 10:30 a.m. Saturday gives children and their parents the chance to enjoy the library together. Families can bring their children to trick-or-treat at the library from 4-9 p.m. on Halloween.
Reagan King, the 3-year-old fairy princess, was proud of the costume her mother picked out for her and quick to talk about it. But with her bag of goodies clutched in her hand, she also put in a good word about the library.
“We can learn so many things here,” she said.
