Mystery sound rattles windows, residents; baffles officials

Around 12:20 p.m. Monday, a series of loud booms was heard in many parts of Jefferson City and Cole County.

The origin remains a mystery, but an aircraft breaking the sound barrier is considered the most likely cause.

Numerous calls were received at the 911 center. Some reports indicated the noises rocked and shook buildings, but authorities reported no damage being attributed to the booms.

Police went to the area where crews are working on the City View interchange. Blasting has been taking place to reshape the land, but workers said they were not blasting at that time. However, they did hear the booms, just as other citizens had.

“If that were a blasting incident, something catastrophic would have happened,” said Jefferson City Fire Department Education Officer Jason Turner, who said their department got a number of calls and e-mails from citizens wondering what had happened.

“After we got the calls we started checking with those contractors who had blasting permits at this time and all were not blasting when the booms were heard,” he said.

Streaks were spotted in the sky by police officers not long after the booms were heard, making them believe it was an airplane breaking the sound barrier.

Officers called the control tower at the Jefferson City Memorial Airport to see if they could find out from the FAA what had taken place. Although no definitive answer was found, all indications pointed to a sonic boom.

Since Monday was a state and federal holiday, the Missouri National Guard was not flying their planes, according to spokesperson Capt. Tammy Spicer.

“Most of our activity would be down at Ft. Leonard Wood, where we do have a bombing range,” she said. “Because it was a holiday I would be shocked to find out someone was flying around, unless it was a something set up ahead of time.”

The Missouri National Guard does have a squad of F-15's based at Lambert Airport in St. Louis.

" Exploding trees? Maybe it's related to a story I heard on NPR in April 2005. Those interested can go to the NPR dot org website and type "maple woes" into the search window to listen to this intriguing story... "

" It is funny that someone brought up exploding trees but it was said by the police department to many that it was the trees when too much ice was on them that they were exploding or breaking and falling causing the big booms...I also remember that story. Look on KRCG I believe they reported that story in the winter. "

" Maybe he meant trees that had fallen and hit the ground? Ya think? Or maybe not. Exploding trees, thats a new one. "

concernedcitizen wrote on Oct 12, 2007 5:11 PM:

" I found it truly hysterical when I was told by the Jeff City Police Dept that it was exploding trees. But then I am a city girl & didnt know if it could be true, not gullible but from a big city (there is a difference, LOL). I was curious to find out what they were especially since this happened during the winter last year and then again a few days ago. Thanks for all the input! "

" I believe I've figured out what the sound was you guys. I just looked out my window and it appears that the giant Sycamore tree in my back yard has exploded. It's horrible. There are pieces of tree everywhere. Sorry about that. "

" You need to secure your pictures a little better Jade! I endured a true blast at my house years ago. I mean it rocked the house so badly that people came flooding out of their homes, wanting to know what the heck it was. It felt way different from this boom thingy. Don't know how to explain it. The "blast" shook my house from the ground up. This boom was almost like a compression type sound. Things shook but nothing like the blast. "

jadedangel82 wrote on Oct 12, 2007 7:18 AM:

" The article addressed the possibility of blasting, Life. The new Wal-Mart blasting site is 20 minutes from my house, I would hope that those people wouldn't have access to any material that could create a sound wave that could travel as far as it did with the force to knock my picture frames off the wall. "

" Concernedcitizen: Trees exploding? Oh my god, thats funny. Ha!!!!!!!!!!! "

" Mako - we live right under a flyway and see a lot of fighter jets above us. We are retired and stepped outside immediately when it happened and there were vapor trails above us. I would bet you are 100 percent correct. "

" Could it have been the "blasting" area on highway 50 where they are building the new one? I'm just asking, I have no idea and didn't hear anything. But I noticed a blasting zone sign on the highway this week. Just a thought...probably not right, but nonetheless, it's a thought. "

mako wrote on Oct 11, 2007 9:13 PM:

" Around mid-MO, it was most likely an F-15 Eagle or F-16 Falcon fighter. An F-18 Hornet (Navy) or F-22 Raptor (all based in Florida, Virginia, and Alaska) could also go supersonic, but they are not as likely in this area. Wikipedia has a pretty good article about sonic booms but this won't let me post the link since ".org" is an inappropriate word. One unique characteristic of a sonic boom is a double-boom. "

Boscoe wrote on Oct 11, 2007 4:43 PM:

" Folks in Ashland heard the boom(s) too. Probably the booms were the result of a test flight of the Aurora, a ramjet-powered reconaissance and strike aircraft capable of flying at least five times the speed of sound and deploying anywhere in the world in a matter of hours. "

concernedcitizen wrote on Oct 11, 2007 3:10 PM:

" Thanks Justin, that would explain it. Mako if not this type of aircraft than what type would make a sonic boom? I did confirm w/ coworkers about last winter and they remember talk around the office regarding the noises. They were blasting a lot in Jeff City for the new Kohls store and tried to say that was where the noise came from but I have coworkers from Linn to Eldon to California and they all heard it, very strange, is all I can say! thanks for the input! "

mako wrote on Oct 11, 2007 1:43 PM:

" The B2 is not supersonic. If you ever hear a sonic boom from a B2, it means it is crashing. "

Justin wrote on Oct 11, 2007 8:36 AM:

" Hey Concerned, theres a good chance you wouldnt have heard this before, b/c aside from missouri, there aren't many places where the B-2s reside. Those are the planes that they are out flying when we get these lovely sonic booms. And those are also the planes that the military likes to deny are out flying b/c of their attempt to be stealthy. "

jadedangel82 wrote on Oct 11, 2007 7:33 AM:

" I forgot to mention, Justin, that I live in Linn, lol. And I think it was louder there than anywhere else. And I didn't 'see' anything in the sky, there was way too much cloud cover from the cold front moving in but I clearly heard what sounded like a low-flying plane. As for last winter, I never heard anything, I haven't heard a sonic boom in years. I thought I remembered hearing something about regulations on minimum flight altitudes when breaking the sound barrier so that could be the cause of the military denials as well. "

concernedcitizen wrote on Oct 10, 2007 5:02 PM:

" Forgot to mention that I called the police department the last time this happened and was told it was the freezing weather. (it was actually more than a few months ago as I had previously mentioned, I remember now it was in the winter) I was told it was trees "exploding" which I looked into and could not find any info on "exploding" trees. "

concernedcitizen wrote on Oct 10, 2007 4:45 PM:

" My concern w/ this noise is that it happened a few months ago and no one seemed to care then either. I asked several co workers when it happened and they agreed they heard it and it was a large radius as this was. I am not sure about a sonic boom, I am not sure I have heard one before. I have not lived in MO long and have never heard this noise any other state I have lived in. "

jb9139 wrote on Oct 10, 2007 4:26 PM:

schae39 wrote on Oct 10, 2007 1:30 PM:

" We live on the on this side of Fulton and we heard it!! It shook the walls it was so loud! I have heard sonic booms before but this did seem different, there were actually 2 of them, one wasn't as loud as the second. First thing that popped in my mind was the power plant blew! "

slow_iq wrote on Oct 10, 2007 1:23 PM:

" And there I was minding my own business when all of a sudden I heard a BOOM and saw a bright light. It was a spaceship coming for me. I tried to run but much like a bad dream I could not get away. Well long story short I was abducted and taken away in the mother ship. They did tests on me and now I hear voices. They speak to me and tell me what to do. But I wish the voices wouldn’t speak to me in Spanish. It’s so hard to understand them when I don’t speak Spanish. "

Justin wrote on Oct 10, 2007 1:11 PM:

" On the radio yesterday, there were people who called in and said they heard it in Linn!! This thing was a massive sound wave of some sort, whatever caused it. As for the military and all that denying it, if they didnt get prior premission to do it, they could get in a lot of trouble, hence the denial. "

jadedangel82 wrote on Oct 10, 2007 1:00 PM:

" I live right next door to my in-law's farm and I had just heard one of their trucks start up only seconds before the boom hit. I'll admit that my first thought was of an explosion. But I stepped outside as soon as I got my breath back and I heard what sounded like a plane overhead, so I assumed it was a sonic boom. But I've heard many of those in my life and I've NEVER heard anything like that! "

dJINjC wrote on Oct 10, 2007 12:33 PM:

" Byron W. Yes they did happen quite often, Back in the 70's i heard these alot but for some reason this 1 was just different to me, maybe cause i lived way out in the country and houses were far and few , Here i am side by side in a sub-division and may have echoed more off the houses. "

dJINjC wrote on Oct 10, 2007 12:20 PM:

" I am on the West side of Jeff and heard this too,My dog was laying on the floor and is scared to death of thunder but all the dog did was lift her head up and look at me. All it did here was shake the windows,I even heard that north Callaway heard this. This could have been a Sonic boom from a plane, It also could have been the Cold air mass coming in pretty quick too, or a meteorite, There is also another possibility , There is such a thing called Seneca Guns( small shallow earthquakes) these can shake homes and sound like sonic booms, they happen along coast lines mainly but have been reported far inland. "

Justin wrote on Oct 10, 2007 8:57 AM:

" I agree, it was a pretty nutty. I was at home with the kids as they were off school, and the whole house shook. i thought something had exploded somewhere close by, or something to that effect. It had to be have been a sonic boom to have affected the area of people that it did. "

jadedangel82 wrote on Oct 10, 2007 7:45 AM:

" That was aweful. I've heard several sonic booms in my lifetime but never one as loud as the one I heard Monday. It shook my entire house, knocked pictures off my wall and entertainment center... scared the life out of me! "
