Students seek unity in prayer

With backpacks dangling and holding science projects, more than two dozen Thomas Jefferson Middle School students gathered around their school's flagpole Wednesday morning for prayer and unity.

“I've been looking forward to coming out and talking to God,” said eighth-grader Jack Young, who helped lead the praise songs during the See You At the Pole event.

“All kids need to know it's good to pray; we need to talk to the Lord, he's our savior,” Young said.

Thousands of students across the nation and even in other countries gathered around the flagpoles on their respective campuses to lift up praise and intercession before classes began.

“Gather. Unite. Pray. Come Together.” is the 2007 theme, based on John 17:20-23. See You at the Pole is a student-initiated, student-led movement that started in the Ft. Worth suburb of Burleson, Texas, in 1990.

In 2006, more than 2 million teenagers from all 50 states and on six continents met for See You at the Pole.

As buses dropped off students, the gathered at Thomas Jefferson and sang praises led by Zach Dumas and Dylan Miller on guitar. Then youth minister Troy Easley from Capital City Christian Church offered some encouragement for them to pray.

Prayer is a powerful tool, yet as simple as a soul crying out to God, Easley said.

Busy schedules, distractions and even self-absorbed priorities can prevent a powerful prayer life, he said.

But he urged the students to be like the Old Testament prophet Elijah and pray earnestly.

“It's important that the students have the opportunity to pray for their school and country, a chance to come together and show that they care,” said Norma Oldvader, who sponsors the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. “They see they're not alone, that it's okay to be a Christian and show your faith.”

Eighth grader Elizabeth Thomas said she didn't mind waking up a little earlier to make it in time for See You At The Pole.

“I just wanted to see all the Christian kids together,” Thomas said. “We all need to see who the Christians are and support them, encourage them.”

" joytotheworld, I think it is quite possible that the cause of the downhill spiral in society may be due to taking religion out of schools. I say that because there is an element of society that is not exposed to religion anywhere else. In the past at least they were exposed to it in school. "

" It's great that the kids are celebrating Christ just as I did as a child . Taking it out of the schools was the start of a downhill spiral in society . Not because of that persay , it just happened . "

" Another comment on prayer in school. I am a paramedic and had the tragic misfortune to work on a 13 year old boy who had been accidentally shot in the head. The boy died the next day. In this small town, the superintendant of schools declared a holiday on the day of the funeral and the school gym was packed for the funeral. His jr. high football buddies were all decked out in jerseys. And we prayed in a public school. I am proud of that community and the way they handled this tragedy. I liked their "don't tell me I can't pray in school" attitude. I'll never forget that boy or what that community did to honor his memory. "

" Jac and Justin have nailed the issue correctly. The US Supremme Court got it wrong and is now too politically polarized to change it's decision. A violation of the separation of church and state REQUIRES an act of congress under the first amendment. But the Supreme Court stopped reading the mandate at the semicolon. "Congress shall make no law regarding the estblishment of religion; NOR PROHIBIT THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF". Did congress pass a law I'm not aware of on this issue? I think not. Every time I am not allowed to pray in a public building my constitutional right to the free exercise therof is violated. They got it wrong and it needs to be changed. "

" I feel this is a wonderful thing to have in the public schools, some of you know my views on today's children and I think if we had a little more prayer (no matter what religion you are) in our homes and schools... children in this country would be in a much better place right now and we wouldn't have such out of control children walking around. "

" Thanks for highlighting the prayer, News Tribune. We need a whole lot more praying in school, work, government, and at home. I agree that it does not have to be in a group. It can easily be a few moments of alone time. Every person should pray several times a day and thank the Lord for his blessings and pray for the Lord to give them wisdom to do the right thing. "

" I think it is great that these young adults came together to do such a great thing. It is nice to see and it is great that the school allowed it. I do know that if we allowed these young children the right to pray in school and read their bibles on read in days maybe when they get to the teenage years they would have something to fall back onto. It is great to see a great article. Thank You News Tribune "

" I think with every bad thing we see in the media there is nothing wrong with "showing off" the fact that you pray and aren't AFRAID to do it where you please. I think it is a good message given in a world that has gone bad and getting worse every day! "

xhepera wrote on Sep 27, 2007 2:54 PM:

" "They did not intend to keep people from prayer and in fact was intended to keep the government from telling people where or when they could pray." Or to whom for that matter. But that's another issue. I believe that it was also intended to keep certain of the "faithful" from using religion and faith as a cudgel with which to harm those who do not believe as they do. That's why the concept sticks in the craw of so many of our "American Taliban." "

xhepera wrote on Sep 27, 2007 2:50 PM:

" . . .as I was saying, I pray constantly throughout the day, a practice I started in my early teens (and I am now in my mid-50s). I simply don't see the need to grandstand and make a show of it. Not that these children are to blame. I believe they're sincere. I also believe that, as I said, they're being used by adults with less than spiritual matters in their hearts. The poster who said that there is a difference between prayer and religious fanaticism is absolutely correct. I would go further and say that there is a difference between love of God and religious fanaticism. I just wish more people were aware of the difference. "

xhepera wrote on Sep 27, 2007 2:44 PM:

" You will notice that not once did I say that I had an issue with these children praying. Quite the contrary. I have nothing against people praying and, frankly, I believe that more young people NEED to have prayer as a part of their lives. I question religious zealotry no matter who the practitoner is though, and I question the motivations of those who are using these children as political tools to achieve their agendae. Witness the young man who said that he had been ". . .looking forward to coming out and talking to God." Excuse me? Where did this young man learn that he could not talk to God anytime and anyplace he wants to? I pray constantly throughout the day. . .(cont'd) "

" this nation was found as "one nation under God". yet some how we are rasing our children to think its not ok to pray in public unless you are in church? To think that is truely the way this country should be ran is sad. "

Justin wrote on Sep 27, 2007 2:03 PM:

" I think you nailed it jac. But once again there are obviously people who are ready to quote the bible as to why are wrong. Honestly, your going to use the bible to preach against prayer? while it may say pray in private im pretty sure it didnt mean that you should only do taht. your verse you quoted it saying not to only pay lip service. Mean your prayers whole heartedly and dont only go to church or pray in public for your image. It has nothing to do with weather you should pray as a group. you wanna go that route, check the bible for the number of times that was done.!! "

jac wrote on Sep 27, 2007 1:16 PM:

" Separation of Church and State has been taken out of context. Our founding fathers wanted separation of the two institutions. Government would not force a particular faith on its citizens and Church, as an institution, would not run the government. They did not intend to keep people of faith out of government. They did not intend to keep people from prayer and in fact was intended to keep the government from telling people where or when they could pray. "

" Ascribing attitudes to a "PC" mentality is a specious argument at best. PC is, in any case, a meaningless term. "Politically Correct" from whose perspective? There is both liberal and conservative political correctness, so let's not play the PC card in an attempt to besmirch decisions with which we disagree. Regarding my earlier statement about denominations, try having grown up in a Roman Catholic family living in a Protestant community where it's believed that you "worship statues" and are unpatriotic because you "owe allegiance to an Italian, and not America" So much for being one in Christ. It's lip-service 'til you scratch the surface. "

Justin wrote on Sep 27, 2007 1:05 PM:

" im sorry but i have to disagree. theres a differance between religious fanatacism and prayer. Theres no reason whatsoeever that time cant be set aside for a few mins where people of whatever religion of their choosing can meet togeather and pray before they start their day. That has nothing to do with turning our children into religious fanatics. its about allowing them to have their God (god) in their lives. To think that allowing children to pray togather leads to terrorism is ludicris. "

" Her name was Madalyn Murray O'Hare and it was not a mistake. While Ms O'hare was an atheist and I am deeply religious, I have to agree with her motivation which was to stop the erosion of the wall between Church and State. A wall wisely put in place by the Founders of this country. A wall that the Supreme Court of this nation saw fit to maintain. Religion and government make very dangerous bedfellows. Witness institutions like the theocracies of Iran and the late Taliban of Afghanistan. Do you think that can't happen here? Think again. Depending upon who is in power, how long would it be before Denomination A decides that Denominations B, C, and D are heretical for not believing "rightly"? "

" Believe me Melissa, im as shocked as you are!!! lol. but really, it is nice to see this. i cant think for anything the name of the lady that caused prayer to be removed from school, bult it was 30+ years ago it happened. Heres an idea, lets evolve as humans, and realize it was a mistake and lets make it right. "

" Matthew 6 -- 5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. 6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. " I for one think its great to see this kind of thing. I went to catholic schools here in JC so it was never an issue. To see this going on here at our public schools is great. It so unfortunate now as it is, that kids arent allowed to pray b/c its not "PC" enough, and God forbid we had a kid over hear them praying to a differant god then they worship and be offended. Personally, i hope this kind of thing continues for a long time to come. "
