Lady Crusaders open soccer season with win over Lebanon

The Helias Lady Crusaders put the formula to the test in their season opener. And passed.

Traditionally, the Lady Crusaders rely on their defense to carry the team until the offense hits its stride.

“It's going to take awhile,” Helias coach Chuck Register said after the Lady Crusaders blanked the Lebanon Lady Yellowjackets 1-0 on Monday night at the 179 Soccer Park. “Like I always say, our defense is going to have to keep us in the game early in the season. And it did tonight.”

The scoring play started in the Helias half of the field just over 10 minutes into the second half. Katie Pitts got the ball to Brandy Jungmeyer, who found a crossing Melissa Young. Young then redirected the ball past the Lebanon keeper.

“It was what we talked about at halftime,” Register said. “We wanted to get the ball down the field and find somebody moving in front of the net.

“It was nice that we put a bunch of touches together to get a goal.”

The Helias defense made the tally stand up.

“We did a good job of keeping the ball around the middle of the field and not giving up anything dangerous,” Register said. “They had a couple of chances where they got the ball in, but we were able to get it out of there.”

Marcella Buel played the first half in net for Helias, while Annie Struemph played the second. Neither was really tested.

“But they will be down the road,” Register said.

The Lady Crusaders were happy to get a game under their belts.

“Finally, we're not banging into each other on the practice field,” Register said. “We got to see some things we need to work on and we can take this win and build off of it.”

Helias will play Friday and Saturday at the Rolla Tournament. The Lady Crusaders will open against Hickman at 6:45 p.m. Friday, then face Rolla and Washington on Saturday.

In the JV game, the Lady Crusaders got goals from Courtney Raush and Olivia Keth in a 2-0 victory over the Lady Yellowjackets.
