Somewhere in the rest period between the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth, the Jays and Lancers saw a huge momentum swing take place. Unfortunately for the Jays, it swung into the favor of the Lancers, and Lafayette went on to post a 55-43 win in the MFA Oil/Break Time Shootout at Mizzou Arena.
“It's the story of our season,” Jefferson City coach David Fox said. “We're good enough to be close to people, but we can't finish. It's as simple as that.”
After trailing by 10 at halftime, the Jays came out and put together a superb third quarter, outscoring the Lancers 16-5 to go up 36-35.
The centerpiece of the quarter was an impressive 14-0 run by Jefferson City, which was capped off by back-to-back 3-pointers by Doug Smith. The first gave the Jays their first lead since 6-4, while the second gave them their biggest lead of the game at 36-32.
But just as quickly as the Jays turned the tide on the Lancers, the Lancers took it right back in the final stanza.
Lafayette started the period with a 5-0 spurt on a three-point play and two free throws, and the Lancers went on outscore the Jays 20-7 to pull away.
“To be honest with you, until we step up and make some plays and create a different type of an attitude in those type of situations, it's going to continue to be like that,” Fox said. “We have a breakdown, or something bad happens, and it snowballs.
“We lack leadership, we don't have people who can get us through those situations, we lack togetherness.”
The Lancers connected on an impressive 14-of-15 free throws in the fourth quarter to thwart any comeback attempt by the Jays.
Lafayette outscored Jefferson City by five points in each of the first two quarters, 17-12 in the first and 13-8 in the second, to lead 30-20 at halftime.
The Jays led just twice in the opening half and trailed by as many as 12 points, that coming at 30-18 in the second quarter.
The biggest deficit of the game for Jefferson City was 55-41 with :22.6 left in the game.
“The effort's not bad, but effort's not good enough,” Fox said. “The teams we're playing, it's just not going to happen.
“... We're trying all kinds of different lineups, we're changing personnel, we've tried all types of things. There's some people on this team who have to step up and take this team and allow us to finish (games).
“I don't know what else to say. You know we're frustrated.”
Matt Morris paced the Jays (5-7) with 13 points, while Lucas Dahl had 12 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Kevin Fessler had a game-high 15 points, including a 9-of-10 effort from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter, to pace Lafayette. Tyler Griffey chipped in with 14 points.
The Jays will return to action Tuesday when they host Camdenton.
