Thanks to a pair of 3-pointers by Doug Smith, the Jefferson City Jays used a 10-0 burst in the second quarter to take a 26-16 lead late in the first half.

The Jays would score just 11 points the rest of the game. And that includes overtime.

Not quite good enough.

Karlos Washington canned a 3-pointer with 52 seconds left to send the game to overtime, and the Marquette Mustangs outscored the Jays 7-0 in the extra frame in a 44-37 win over Jefferson City Friday night at Fleming Fieldhouse.

“It's the same thing that happened to us against Helias a week ago, when we went nine minutes without scoring,” Jays coach David Fox said. “One, we got tired. Two, we quit doing the things we were doing in the first half. Three, they went to a zone and we didn't handle it very well.

“It's a confidence deal. We've got to find some kids who will step up and make some baskets, like you saw in the first half. We've just got to get that consistency.”

The Jays (5-6) led 15-10 after one quarter and extended the margin to 26-16 late in the first half. The Mustangs (9-3) were within 26-18 at the break and, despite making just 4-of-10 shots in the third quarter, pulled within 30-28 after three.

The Jays led by as many as four points in the fourth, before the Mustangs pulled even on Washington's late 3-pointer. The Jays had the final shot at the end of regulation, but Seth Norment's 3-pointer was off the mark.

“Seth had a great look,” Fox said, “it just didn't fall.”

The Mustangs took the lead for good on a 17-footer by Will Carpenter with 3:07 left in OT, then hit five free throws down the stretch to seal it.

“We're playing better with the exception, obviously, of some offensive deficiencies,” said Fox, whose team plays Lafayette at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the MFA Oil/Break Time Shootout at Mizzou Arena. “The effort's there, we just have to have some people step up and make plays for us.

“Defensively, we're there. We've just got to find a way to put the ball in the basket. Quite honestly in the second half, especially the fourth quarter, we absolutely lost our concentration.”

Smith and Matt Morris led the Jays with nine points apiece, while Andy Rosburg scored 14 and Washington had 11 for the Mustangs.

The Jays were without the services of 6-4 senior Terrell Resonno, who's out indefinitely with an illness.

Jefferson City won the sophomore game 44-41.
