Jays focus on positives

Even though they were disappointed with their finish, the Jefferson City Jays were able to pluck some positives from this weekend's Capital City Soccer Invitational.

“We've had a pretty good weekend,” Jays coach Eddie Horn said after Jefferson City stopped the Rolla Bulldogs 2-0 in the third-place game Saturday at the 179 Soccer Park. “We weren't playing for the championship and that was disappointing. But we did a lot of good things.”

Such as:

* Break out of a season-long scoring skid, totaling 10 goals in their three games.

“Obviously, that's better than we've done all season,” Horn said.

* And show some resiliency. The Jays rebounded from a 2-1 deficit late to send their semifinal game with eventual tournament champion Raymore-Peculiar to overtime, then penalty kicks.

“With the season that we've had, it would have been easy to turn it in,” Horn said. “But we find a way to tie it and then pick up that PK experience, with as evenly matched as the district teams are, that may pay off down the road.”

The Jays scored in each half against Rolla. Lee Kincheloe scored in the first half, while Jake Schrimpf accounted for the score in the second half.

Wes Osborn gave the Jays a 1-0 lead against Ray-Pec in Saturday's semifinal.

After Ray-Pec came back to take a 2-1 lead, Brian Crawford scored in the final minute of regulation to tie the game at 2 and send it to overtime, then to penalty kicks.

The Jays led 3-1 in the PK round before eventually falling 5-4.

The Jays opened the tournament Friday night with a 6-0 blanking of Farmington. Taylor Webb and Colby Stuart combined for the shutout.

Justin Elliott scored in the first half for the Jays. Tallying goals in the second half were Osborn, Duncan Hughes, Eliott Langarica, Schrimpf and Jeff Clarkson.

“In the big picture, it was a pretty good weekend for us,” Horn said.

The Jays (5-6-1) will host Fulton on Tuesday.
