The Blue Tigers didn't need the board, as they failed to score a point against Lane College. The Dragons, meanwhile, would have kept the scoreboard operator busy if not for the faulty piece of machinery.
So it was thanks only to the diligent public address announcer that the fans at Dwight T. Reed Stadium knew the final margin of victory for the Dragons was 36-0.
“We took a pounding,” Lincoln head coach Lemar Parrish said. “We've got a young football team and we made a lot of mistakes, but Lane played well. They just brought it to us.”
But at least the Blue Tigers didn't quit, unlike the crew working on repairing the scoreboard, who gave up midway through the third quarter.
In fact, Lincoln's deepest penetration of the game came with under two minutes remaining when the Blue Tigers finally got past the Lane 30-yard line.
However, Lincoln failed to score any points after a field-goal attempt was blocked. That was one of the lowlights for the Blue Tigers that included a snap sailing over their punter's head that resulted in a safety with just :04 left before halftime and a 58-yard punt return for a touchdown by Lane.
“I expected to make mistakes, but not as many as we did,” Parrish said. “The tackling wasn't good - we've got to work on that. And I thought we would have more aggression than we did.
“But those things can be corrected. We'll go back to the drawing board on Monday and correct them.”
Parrish said part of that could be due to Lane's big edge in experience, as Lincoln's roster is made up of 39 freshmen, 10 sophomores, just four juniors and only five seniors.
“Strength and confidence, those things played a part,” he said. “(The Dragons) were more confident and a little bit stronger.”
Lane got the only points of the first quarter on a field goal, then scored a touchdown, another field goal and the safety in the second quarter to lead 15-0 at halftime.
At the break, Lincoln had carried the ball 19 times for minus-14 yards and run 28 plays for a grand total of one yard. Lane, meanwhile, had racked up 37 plays for 234 yards.
“Now our guys have seen the difference between high school players and college players,” Parrish said. “And we saw how we need to practice differently. We thought we could just come out and turn it on and turn it off, and you can't do that.”
Lane got two touchdowns in the third quarter and one in the fourth to round out the scoring.
For the game, Lincoln carried the ball 31 times for minus-10 yards and had just 56 yards of total offense. Lane, which averaged 6.0 yards per play to Lincoln's 1.1, ended up with 450 yards of total offense.
One bright spot for the Blue Tigers was that they were able to come up with three interceptions, with Derrick Manning, Julio Etienne and Dana Chambers getting one each. Manning also led all players with 11 solo tackles and four assists. Terrence Wilson and Jay Tolliver had one sack apiece.
Lincoln will return to action on Saturday against Central Missouri State University.
“We'll put it together and work hard next week and come out and play better,” Parrish said. “You've got to have a short-term memory, and I've got one of those.”
