Woman charged with harassment

Published: Saturday, October 6, 2001 12:00 AM CDT
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A black school bus driver was charged with four counts of harassment Friday after she allegedly distributed racist notes targeting other black bus drivers.

Lee Hooker-Medlock, 37, a Kansas City woman who drives for the Grandview school district, told police she composed the notes and placed them on buses driven by blacks because she was upset about being treated unfairly at work, according to a police affidavit.

The notes contained threatening language and a racial slur -- composed with letters cut from magazines -- and were found on several buses Monday morning.

Seven black drivers feared for their safety and did not drive their morning shifts, but all drivers worked in the afternoon.

According to the police affidavit, Grandview school officials said Hooker-Medlock had received a letter recently "addressing a behavior problem involving the use of profanity to fellow employees."

Harassment is a misdemeanor under Missouri law.
